My mother had 10 children and she taught all of us to read before we were 2 years old. Some were better at it than others, but those who were slow readers at this age did better in math. If a parent takes any time with a child, the child always learns early. The parents who think that is the schools responsibility, have kids who don't learn till 5 or 6 and have a hard time all the way through school without help. My mom went over schoolwork with all of us every night, even through high school. She worked and left each of the ten of us 18 million when she died. So this excuse of "no time" is just an excuse.

I was a little shy of 5, but I don't think I really had it down until after kindergarten. My daughter who is now 7 started reading in preschool at about 4 1/2, but , didn't really get it down until Kindergarten. Kids are doing things earlier now I guess

I was 6, we started reading in the first grade. I remember clearly, although it was 50 years ago, walking with my friend down the hallway at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Schenectady, NY and commenting that I thought it would be impossible to for me to learn how to read. Several weeks later I was reading about Dick, Jane and Spot.

I learned to read with my dad on Sunday morning's comics. I was 3.5 or 4 years old.

I started learning how to read before I went to school... My family always pointed out signs and letters and numbers on car rides..
I think that is fairly typical for many kids.
