Anyone can cut meat in a non-union meat market. Everything you learn is on the job. If you belong to a union, you have to take a class that certifies you as a journeyman meat-cutter. Real butchers are almost completely extinct. They knew how to break a whole side of beef, or a pig or lamb carcass. Now a days we get what are called "primal cuts" which are sections of the carcass that have already been separated from the rest. The answer to your question is that supermarkets don't employ "butchers" anymore. Now we are considered "meat cutters". If it is a union supermarket, like mine, then you have to take a certification class sometime during your apprenticeship in order to become a journeyman, but everything worth knowing you find out on the job.

I can only answer for the states of Georgia and Alabama, in which there is no license required. However, in order to operate some of the equipment in the meat department, you must 18 years of age or older. Successful supermarkets usually bring their butchers up through the ranks, step by step, until they've learned the craft. While there may be states that do require some sort of certification, not all states do.

i imagine it depends on the state but why dont u ask the butcher in ur local supermarket.

They need a Health Certificate and are trained in their craft. You don't just turn Joe Blow loose with a razor sharp slicer.

No. If they are in a state that requires one, they usually get in under hte grocery chain's license.

My cousin had to work first, then be a journeyman, and apprentice. And a health safety class. Then he could work at his original job.
