Cats jumping up on counters in the kitchen can be a nuisance, plus very dangerous for the cat if he happens to jump on a hot stove versus a counter. Several methods have been used to prevent or change this behavior. We generally want to use what is called 'remote correction,' meaning the cat will not know where the correction came from. This will help prevent the cat from displaying the behavior simply to get attention, or waiting until we are not around to correct him.
If we see the cat starting to jump up on the counter, we can throw a pop can filled with a few coins and taped shut, toward the cat. We do not want to hit the cat, but want to startle him so he stops what he is doing. This works fine if we are in the kitchen waiting for him, but how do we correct him when we are not around? This is where imagination comes in. Try placing cookie sheets filled with water on the counter so when your kitty jumps up they get a suprise. Well good Luck I hope this helps :)

The fact is the cat is hungry, they will seldom bother you when they are satiated, they treat the food you have as food for all like it has been brought back into the den, they are looking for their share. So increase the food you give the cat, if it is tinned cat food if you check the tin out it is predominately water, not very good at bulking them up etc. Add a powdered supplement from the pet shop, most cats love it, also try him / her with some dried food if u aren't already such as James Wellbeloved or Iams, that can be left out for a while although it absorbs moisture from the air eventually and can become a bit less appetising to the cat, time to empty and put fresh stuff in. With dried food make sure the cat has a good supply of water, preferably from the cold bathroom tap, they are not keen on the cold water drinking tap we use as it has a lot of chlorine's and the like. That's why cat's jump into the sink or the bath, they can smell the water, really, they like to lap at the running water, but make it a slow trickle, too much and they freak out!

He's just scavenging. The cat food you feed him does not taste as good as the tit bits he's had from you before. He knows that he can get it out of the bin and off the side when preparing the food. You have shown him that there is more to life than whiskers or felix and your cat has got the savvy to find it or steal it. The only way you can deal with this is to shut him out of the kitchen when food is being prepared. You will also have to put some kind of guard on the bin or remove it on a night time. Somewhere where your boss of the house can't get to it.

Make sure that he is never rewarded for this behavior. If he jumps up on the counter and finds food, he will always jump up there searching for that reward. Get a bin with a lid that he can't open. Keep all food in the pantry, cabinet or refrigerator. Don't leave anything out on the counters or table. If you see him jump up on the counter, throw a can with some pennies in it near him (but not at him) or spray him with a water bottle to deter him. If he does it right in front of you, push him off and spray him if he comes near, again. You have to be smarter than he is. If he can get food from the counter, he's going to.

you need to teach then as kittens whats their food and whats urs but if it not a kitten anymore then u could just try anyway. Buy a water pistol and whenever the cat goes to take food etc give it a spray but make sure it doesnt see you doing it. in time it will learn that when it goes for your food something not nice happens.
Alternativly if u dont like the idea of shooting ur cat with water use something like a empty can with some beads or something and shake it loudly near then as a punishement instead.
Also never give the ur food even left overs, they need to know whats urs and whats theres.

Try Pavlovian training. You need not shoot the cat nor squirt him with a water gun, a loud noise is sufficient to scare him away from the food. After a few times the cat will not be so willing to jump up for the food anymore.

Liam...you've just earned the title of SICKO. I certainly hope you don't engage in such behavior because the SPCA could come after you and arrest you for it!!
To the asker..try spraying kitty lightly with a squirt bottle. He'll get the message quickly.

An old friend of mine would get a water gun and squirt her cats with the water gun everytime they would do that. If that doesnt help, put your little one in a cage until you are done eating. He probably wont be happy about it but he needs to know who is boss. Good luck!!!

You can try squirting him with a water bottle every time he jumps up. After getting squirted a couple of times, they get the idea.
