OK, I've learned this from being married to the most impossible man to shop for in the world!!! Give him something that he needs or will use within the next two days! Whether it's food, beer, a george foreman grill, a money clip or a pocket knife... make sure it won't gather dust on a shelf or sit in the back of the drawer and he'll appreciate it... that or a lap dance always puts a smile on a mans face!

If he is a genealogist (You posted in genealogy) and you can afford it, a year's worth of Ancestry Census Images for $159.99 would send him into 7th heaven.

If he isn't a genealogist, a Swiss Army knife. I have one in my car, one I carry in my pocket and one I carry when I go camping.

has the "Sportsman" for $14.99. It has a fingernail file where most others have a second cutting blade. It has most of the things a gentleman needs without weighing a ton. You can't find it in stores very often, so it would be special. It is my favorite, but my personal prejudices are not universal truths, so he might like the "Tinker" or another model.

A set of good socket wrenches will last forever and he'll think of you whenever he uses them.

If he is your boyfriend, then a massage, or a nice night out with some intimacy later. Also, you can dress sexy for him and cook him dinner with candles, etc. Meet him at the door wearing a skimpy French Maid's outfit. Get creative.

If he is a platonic friend, then a book by a favorite author, or some guy thing you can find at an auto parts store. Don't buy cologne. I am sure his parents bought him a bunch of it already.

See what his interests are and go with that. If he likes sports, then something related to that. If he likes movies, then maybe a years service with Netflix or something similar.
There's also a night out in town, dinner, movies, dancing, drinking. Whatever suits his fancy.

depends on his style...is he a cufflink, shirt and tye type man? or a sweatsuit and sneakers type of guy? just don't get him anything he won't wear or use...sleepwear, cologne, and watches are always nice "in between" gifts
