Mac and WIndows are each very good. I have both and I love both for different reasons. For example I love that Windows can run DVD Shrink, trying to run it in Wine is a joke though so I have to find other solutions on my Mac. This goes both ways, some great Mac software will never be available for Windows. There are ways around these problems though like Bootcamp, Hackintosh or virtual machines. Then again virtual machines are resource heavy, Hackintosh is experimental and unreliable and Bootcamp is a pain. As other posters have said a lot of companies produce both Windows and Mac versions of their software. This is true not only for large companies but many smaller developers as well. Some software is also released open source, so compiling it yourself is an option. No matter how you look at it, either operating system is capable of tackling the same accomplishments. Just don't be afraid to do some research, find out what is available for the system you use and if the tool will handle the work you intend it for. Good luck!
