About 8 seconds so not desperately fast, after the Mk1 the Golf GTI became a lardy old hector and lost some of its magic, even the current turbo versions aren't a patch on the original. Sadly with hot hatches the only way to go forwards is to go back to the design philosophy of the 80's. If you want a hard charging hot hatch look for a Mk1 Golf GTI - and you'd be surprised how many there are still is very good condition, or a 205 GTI 1.9, or a Clio Williams, if you want more modern try and find a Clio Trophy which depending who you ask is the best hot hatch ever.

The 16v sort develop into presented round 1986. earlier that, all GTis were 8v. you could tell immediately once you raise the bonnet - the 16v engine has a flat-ish alloy suitable, with a blue VW badge and 16v lettering - the 8v engine has a a lot narrower suitable, and no blue lettering.

I believe the original manufacturers' claim was 7.9 seconds (not much less than the 8.1sec quoted for the 8v).
