I have a formica countertop, and can't afford to tile/ replace it. What else can I do to update it without taking it out?

Go in the flooring department of a big home hardware store such as Home Depot or whatever. Ask them for the product used to even out a floor before laying tile or carpeting, etc. It's a pouch of powder that you mix with a liquid acrylic. Once it's mixed, you spread it out evenly. It looks exactly like cement. You can lightly sand it once it's dry to even it out and then seal it. It looks great with a mat finish sealer but if you don't like mat, go for satin finish sealer but whatever you do, don't make it a high gloss sealer...

I have had good luck painting my formica. Clean it with a degreaser. Sand it and paint it with a good primer paint. such as Kilz. Check out the exterior or premium Kilz. You can have it colored to match your decor. Paint three coats..letting it dry well between each coat. I use those thin acrylic cutting sheets available at dollar stores and keep them on the counter. So far it has not chipped or faded..8 years..
