Don't let him. You need to establish yourself as pack leader, especially with the bully breeds. They are great dogs, but very stong willed. I recommend obedience training, especially if you can find a trainer who knows this breed type. If you do not train and properly exercise this type of dog you will have a difficult, possibly dangerous, canine on your hands in about a year or so.

The best thing to do is turn and ignore him, make it very obvious. Only reward him with a treat when he is on the ground, not jumping up. For long term management, buy him a Gentle Leader Head Halter (from a pet store) and get him in obedience training ASAP. You may have to spend a little time and money taking him to class, but it will create a much more enjoyable pet. Most obedience classes are about 8 weeks long and run around $100. Make sure it is a class that you take him to rather than sending him off, because you want him to mind you and respect you. Good luck.

Begin obedience training right away and if he's not neutered, have it done immediately. He's challenging your leadership skills and you are failing the test. Every time he tries this, instantly pull the leash up snug, spin around in his face, firmly tell him to "knock it off!" and make him sit uncomfortably like that for a few seconds. Then resume your walk and praise him calmly when he's walking nicely.

The best (and cheapest) way is to take your own dog to training classes at your local AKC recognized obedience club. The trainers are a lot better and more experienced than any you'll find at a pet store.

Keep him on a very short lead, as soon as he starts jumping/biting, stop and make a sharp sounding noise. Make him sit down, when he is calm praise him/give him a treat.
You could alternatively make the sharp sound and walk back the way you came. then turn round when his is behaving
Repeat and repeat this even if it takes much longer to go on a walk.
My dog does the same when I get the lead out, I make him sit still for me to put the lead on.
Do not tease him or play games that might be linked with that behaviour and be consistent, other people might be encourageing him to jump up and grab things.

I work at an animal hospital and I am asked this question frequently. My first question is, is he neutered? The reason why I am asking is because neutering your pet not only avoids testicular cancer, but can also calm him down and can possibly help with his aggression. If he is neutered, show him who is boss. Try bitter apple if he continues to bite, you can get Bitter Apple at your local pet store. Also, if you have a Petsmart nearby, they offer pet training. I hope this helps!!! Good luck!

Try a gentle leader, it works wonders with my dog. www.gentleleader.com

Bully breeds can take a bit more training than other breeds. I suggest brushing up on walking manners with him. He needs to learn this is not ok.
