Language is cultural and not just about vocabulary. In the Far East where language is often the second language, you will often hear the word -lah used in the same context that "OK" is being used. Their first language uses -lah less as a word but more as a soothing pleasantry - like an "verbal" arm around for reasurance. Foreigners often ask the same question i.e Is it required! - No! is the short answer. Yes! if you want to communicate and not be misunderstood - there is an emotional element in Language. Good communicators instinctively understand this aspect.

Like for the same reason like most females under the age of like 21 cant say a sentence without using the word like 5 times.

No, it isn't required, but a lot of people begin statements in everyday conversation with the word OK (or okay), as in, "OK, I was waiting for the bus . . ."

I think is just a way to open up a conversation. Like using the word like, like, hum, hu, ect. I do not think it is proper english.
