I mean spiritually. I'm reading a study of 5 contemporary possessions and exorcisms but they're all based on a Christian's point of view. So I'm curious what the other religions think about it.

And yes, Atheists: I know. There's no such thing. Go ahead and say it and get your 2 points!! :)

Abriel: Yes I believe that too, about the consent. Our spirits are strong too, and can't be forced out by another... actually the book I'm reading write now, written by a Catholic priest, that has this study in it, also believes that the person has to consent.

i have studied a few possesion cases at university

i feel that with many of them they are usually deeply religious people anyway .. so it may be a subconsious way to deal with any sins they feel they have done
self punishment in a sense

but many i have heard of have either been misdiagnosed illness such as epilepcy or diabetic shock

and then we have also our own energy which can manifest in such a way that a presence can often be felt

one such case was a girl who's family believed her to be possesed
things would fly about and she would curse .. at one point a heavy radiator got ripped off the wall
now the people there were no exorsists ... but paranormal researches
and one lady spoke with the girl ... done a simple visualisation with her ... and told her that it was ok to be angry etc
and since that time ... no demons !
if this was demons ... how could an ordinary person get rid of them by simple relaxation techniques ?

Even though I'm a Witch and Occultist, I think possession is bull. Shamanic horsing is one thing, but outright against-the-will possession just doesn't happen. Spirits don't have that kind of power. I think that it's all in a person's head when that happens. A spirit can make you THINK that it can possess you against your will, and it may even succeed in making you believe it's actually done it, but it can't actually do it. For a true possession to take place, a person has to be willing to be possessed in some fashion, consciously or unconsciously.

Posession and Exorcism does exist in Islam. Usually jinns and sometimes Satan would posess a person. Exorcism is done by an Islamic Scholar who is well versed in Quran. By reciting the Words of God on the posessed, he can chase out the jinn. [watch the video, real exorcism - Islamic perspective]

They all acknowledge it. They just handle it in different ways.
