It won't hurt the cat and if it is an adult cat that's not a nice way to carry it around because its body weighs too much.

When I pick up an adult cat I support its weight on my hip with my arm under the length of its body and my fingers spread out under the front legs. You have complete control of a cat when you do it that way. You can easily tighten up on the cat if it is struggling without squeezing too hard on any one area.

I use a "scruff" when I have to pill a cat or wipe out their eyes, or am working on freeing a mat etc., because a cat will absolutely not resist you if you scruff it.

You shouldn't hold a cat that way because it doesn't support the weight of their tail-end - I'm no vet so I don't know if it will cause physical damage - but I wouldn't suggest it (maybe as kittens 6 months or under).

Full grown cats are too heavy to carry like this. If you have to move the cat and want to carry it by the scruff, support it under the butt with your other hand.

Not really but only do it for a short time like pulling it from under the couch or for a quick control move (like at the vet's). You wouldn't want to be carrying it around like a handbag, would you? (LOL)

If you do it right, it doesn't hurt. But personally, I'm not comfortable doing it myself, I'm afraid I would be doing it wrong. My vet always does it, but I trust him. He deals with cats all day, every day, the man knows what he's doing. I much prefer picking them up and holding them close & snuggling them anyway...

vets actually hold onto alot of cats that way. scruff holding looks very inhumane but it is very natural for a kitten and a full grown cat.

You should never carry a cat like that. It could be harmful. Only mom cats know how, and kittens and cubs are small.

It is ok to carry a cat by its' scruff, but make sure to support the back legs with your other hand.
