ok, i have a 3 month old german sheperd, and when i let him outta his kennel to play, if i turn my head for a SECOND, he either has his head in the cat box or he just brought something outta it, its the clumping kind. i also have a 4 year old jack russell terrier and i have seen her do it before to. NOT often tho. like once a couple months. why do they do this?
i know some of u will say to pick the cat box up and put it higher, well i have tried this and i dont really want a cat litter box on my counters,

why is he doing this? i heard he could be missing some kinda nutrients or something? has anyone elses dog done this? serious answers PLLEEASSE

I wish there was a reasonable answer to your question! My dog does the same thing - it's ridiculous - and it doesn't matter what you do with the cat box. We got our puppy to stop by tapping her on the nose and crating her every time she put her nose in there and so far it seems to work. She still thinks about it but doesn't usually go for it (granted it did take a couple months to accomplish). Another thing that may help is an automatic cat box - it scoops out the cat "mess" and therefor leaves it clean so puppy can't get anything. Good luck I know how difficult this problem can be.

Yes dogs love to eat cat poop, it does not mean they are lacking anything it just means they are a dog. Something in the poop tastes good apparently. The best way to keep them out of the litter box is to take empty milk cartons (plastic) and fill them up with water and a table spoon of bleach, replace the lid and place around the litter box, the faint smell of the bleach will keep the dogs away and may even help with the smell of the cat urine. Make sure to change out the water at least once every 2 weeks. Another solution is to spray around the litter box with uccaliptus oil, that is a more natural way to destract the smell for dogs. Hope that helps.

Take care-

My dog has done the same thing, but we put a hood on the cat box, and she stopped doing that. Maybe put the litter box in a place where your dogs cant get it, then maybe (well not on the counter of course), but maybe a cat door or something to where only the cats can get in. Or put the litter box in the bathroom or garage, and make sure the dogs can't get in there and the cats let you know when they have to go. That's what my aunts do, YES, you can potty train a cat!

dogs just like cat poop. it's a fact. i think it has something to do with protein. cat food has more protein than dog food. try giving your dogs canned food once or twice a week. the other thing you can do is train your dogs to leave the litter box alone. let them know that the litter box is off limits. everytime a dog gets near the box, say "no". it might take a while, but they'll learn.

I have heard that since cats are exclusively carnivores, they often have undigested food left in their poop. Dogs can absorb these nutrients, hence their noxious food choice. You might try a covered cat pan, or try a scented cat litter for a short time. Also, if the cat pan is well scooped, you may not have as much of a problem. good luck!

Yes, my dog does this. I am thinking of drying the poops out and selling them retail in pet stores as dog biscuits to try to make some money on the side. Also if I do that it won't be there in the cat box for the dog to eat. Do you want to be my business partner?

My dog does this to. An he started doing this when we got our new cat. An started coughing to after this. My grandmother says cats don't digest there food all the way. So the dog thinks it is food.

My shitzu does the same thing. They eat because thay think the poop tastes better since is has traces of cat food that tastes better to them than dog food. You shouldn't blame your dog cat food tastes better. though it can make them sick.

He's eating poop, and the litter is stuck to it. Usually they eat their own or some other dog's crap. Just a bad habit.
