The credit reporting agency must verify any items on your report that you dispute. In order to do that, the must have contact information for each item. They should provide you with that information on request. If all else fails, dispute the lien.

I had this problem and it took years to fix it but that is not what you want to hear. This requires a bit of detective work. Calling on the phone does not work, usually. If there was a lien in 1992, which may or may not be the case, who ever filled the lien would have also filed the release but not necessarily in the same year. The problem is that the people that locate the liens for the credit agencies get paid to find the lien not the releases. The credit agency should be able to tell you what county the lien was filed in. Most likely the lien was filed in the county that you lived in during1992, but not always. Once you determine the county, you should go to the county recorders office (some states may call it something else) and explain your problem. Very likely if the person you speak to has been there more than a couple of years, they will know exactly what you are talking about because it happens all of the time. They will direct you to whatever means they store this type of information and have you go through the records and find every thing concerning you. When you find anything, request a certified copy and take those to some place to make several copies of each document you find. Once you find the release that relates to this lien, send a copy to the credit agency that shows it on your record and demand they remove the record of lien. Now the real problem is when there is no release. In that case you have to deal with the agency that placed the lien in the first place. Frequently the problem has been fixed and the tax agency failed to file the release. Make them do so regardless of how much work that may require and get several copies of that release. In my case the IRS held my refund for three years because the taxing agency never filed a release and the lien was an error on their part. I got all of my money plus interest from the IRS by the way so it can be done.

Is this an IRS Lien? If you you request relief through the Lien Unit for your area. Pursuant to IRC Section 6325(a). The request must contain the following,
The date of your request.
Your name, address and SS#.
