They are unpopular because religion has been forced on their ancestors for thousands of years. That's a lot of catching up to do. The last percentage of atheist/agnostics in America I read was 25%, btw. Those 25% have come "out of the closet" in only the last 100 years or so.
To me, it sounds like we're taking over pretty damn quick, if you figure we have tens of thousands of years of superstition to overcome... :)

Ah... another straw man argument. Why do most of your questions contain logical fallacies? Are you doing that on purpose, or, perhaps, do you just not know how to think properly?
About 85% are believers in the Abrahamic death cults of desert monotheism... Christianity, Judaism, Islam. About 75% of those are Christians.
They are all rooted in the myths, superstitions, fairy tales and fantastical delusions of a tribe of ignorant Bronze Age fishermen and peripatetic goat herders.
With regard to the 'coolness' of atheists... would you consider the ability to stay out of jail to be an indicator of 'coolness'? If so, then chew on this for a little while. Christians make up about 75% of the US population and 75% of the US prison population. No big surprise there.
Atheists, on the other hand, make up about 10% of the US population... but they make up only 0.2% of the US prison population. Now, isn't THAT a surprise? That means that atheists are FIFTY (50) times LESS LIKELY to be incarcerated than Christians. Pretty strange, huh, for a group that has no god-given guiding moral principals?
I can think of only two possibilities that might reasonably be said to account for this discrepancy:
1. Atheists are of a higher ethical and moral caliber than Christians, and thus are less prone to do the same kinds of nasty things that land so many Christians in the slammer;
OR,
2. Atheists are, overall, a lot smarter than Christians and thus, they are less likely to get caught in the course of their transgressions.
It's GOT to be one or the other... take your pick.

Like most things, it depends on how you count.
90% of Americans believe in God. Some people take that to mean that 90% of America is Christian, but I find that a problematic number. I'm Neo-pagan and I would tell a phone survey person that I believe in God. Many of them in fact. And Goddesses too.
75% of Americans self-identify as Christian. However I still find that number suspicious.
Because only 30-40% (depending on region) attend Church regularly.

Maybe it's you who are the confused one. 90% of Americans believe in a god, but that doesn't mean they are all Christian. Only about 75% (of adults) say they are Christian, which means 15% believe in some god other than the Christian god.
But even of those who say they are Christian, only about half of them are practicing Christians. That means, that really, the Christian faith is only important to about 35-40%.
So, for at least 60% of the population, Christian faith plays virtually no role in their lives. Atheists are not unpopular among that 60%.

I have just one question for you: Are you what you are because you think it makes you "so cool"?
Atheists are not the ones who are predicting the religious populations of countries. Well, I'm sure that there are a few atheists on that super crack-squad, but because they're good at what they do, not because of their lack of religion.
The reason why the percentages can change is because it is an approximation. Furthermore, some statistics might just including practicing Christians, while others include every Christian.
To answer your main question, atheists aren't atheists because they think it's cool to be an atheist (well, true atheists, that is), they are atheists because they simply do not believe in God. And most of them are as sure that God does not exist as Chrisitans are as such that He does exist.

It's like the popular group at school. People are jealous. Christians get their statistics wrong all of the time. Both numbers show that a majority of the country is Christian. I'm sorry that you're bitter that you just can't let go of your fear. Don't take it out on atheists.

We can't get OUR numbers straight? Sheesh, look who's talking!
Anyway, to answer your "question," atheists are "unpopular" because we threaten the beliefs of the majority. Free-thinkers and those who go against the majority are always unpopular.

no1 cares...just shutup and quit making generalizations. If you aks enough questions about your 'god' then you will soon become one too and realize how stupid you sound.
..and Unpopular?? what does tht mean..I have plenty of freinds, some are christian some are atheist some were christian who I turned into atheists, I really don't discriminate by religion cuz that is just stupid.
If you want to make generalizations then let me ask you something: Why are all christians pedafiles?

It's a timing issue. It just depends on whether you ask them on Saturday night or a Sunday morning.
Popular? Now THERE'S a virtue the Bible should have written more about. Yes, we need St. Brittney Spears, Holy Madonna, the holy message of Gansta Rap & Reality TV. YES, those are the things God wants! POPULAR THINGS ARE GOOD THINGS! Yeah, right.

Atheists are popular in their own way. Oh, and the percentage thing...it doesn't matter what that percent is because it doesn't mean Christians are right and it doesn't mean they are any better of people because there are more of them
