Okay, people. She asked a simple question. Most of you took that and ran with it towards a "Women can't fight" answer. That's a dishonest answer and a complete cop-out.

The reason only men have to join Selective Service is very simple:

(1) The Selective Service Act was passed during the Second World War prior to American intervention in order to identify and train a pool of physically and mentally capable young men for combat. Women were not subject to its conditions because they were required to man the factories in absence of men, maintain families for those where the father was conscripted or volunteered for service, and because there were a number of auxilary organizations such as WAC, WAVES, etc where women filled administrative and medical professions that freed up men for combat units.

(2) In other words, Selective Service was deliberately created to exclude women from the military, since their roles were elsewhere. It was only after the Second World War that something called "The Womens Armed Services Integration Act" enabled women to become full members of the military. Selective Service was retained as an unreformed anachronism, kept on the books but not under any pressure for reform because women who wanted to perform military service could do so, while men who didn't want to be conscripted and serve (a phenomenon which was only prevalent in Vietnam) could just sign up for Selective Service, but were under no compulsion to train or have their time and freedom taken away by its inactive provisions.

In all seriousness, it should really be just abolished, and the savings in the paperwork alone would be worth it for the budget. But the retention of Selective Service was never because women were incapable, but because no one saw fit to get rid of the dinosaur on the books.

On July 2, 1980, President Jimmy Carter re-universal the militia Selective service gadget with a advice that the Act be prolonged to include women. After huge hearings, floor debate and committee instructions on the remember, america Congress enacted the regulation, because it had earlier been, to computer screen to adult men in worry-free words. the concern of ladies being exempted change into addressed and licensed in 1981 through america excellent courtroom in Rostker v. Not one right answer to intelligent question...The reason men are required to register (joining?) for selective service is that most draftees are needed for infantry combat replacements, and since women can't serve in that role, they're not necessary. Right now according to laws that won't be changed, women cant serve in combat positions. They don't serve in combat positions in the IDF either but that's a different society. If the draft is reinstated in this country again, which is not outside the realm of possibility as most people here believe, females will always be exempt. I think most men should have to do some national service, but if you think youre taking my daughter, youre wrong.

Actually, if you look at the forms for selective service, males AND females can join. Its no longer discriminatory. If we ever do have a draft again (and I highly doubt we will), women will be called just as well as men. Count on it.

Because it would still be socially unconscionable to draft women. The battle cry has been for women to be accepted in all jobs and for them to be able to do anything a man can do. However, there would be a mass uprising if Suzie we drafted into the Navy and serving in a combat zone. Please notice the hypocrisy there.

What good would drafting women do? It would double the number of potential recruits for the armed forces. We could increase the number of combat brigades by having women take on more non-combat roles and have more men get into the fight.

Look at the Israel Defense Force. They draft ALL able bodied citizens for 3 years of service and several years for reserve service.

Paraphrasing the great Homer Simpson, it is called the gender gap. You drew the long straw, don't complain about it.

I also wondered how come I had to enroll in the selective service but women didn't.

I am female. I was in the military. So don't think I am sexist or feminist...I am not either. I like equal rights for all.

I think women are not able to be drafted for hygiene reasons. I know that sounds dumb...okay. I however was in the field in the military. Periods suck without toilets and running water it is almost impossible to keep yourself from getting infections and being clean. There is no privacy for such things.

I know..I know. This may be way off the reason for the questions and way off the expected answer. This however is my main reason for thinking that women should just stay themselves out of combat situations. We stink, literally. Otherwise we are completely qualified and should have to protect what is ours.

Voluntary service is OK, mandatory service is not yet acceptable for females in the US. Not even males are "DRAFTED" these days. So it's really a distinction without a difference. If they ever re-activate the draft, they may have to consider including women.

Yeah, I think it sucks too, a double standard. Women should also have to register. But, then again, I am a little crazy and think all Americans should have to do a short stink of mandatory military service to appreciate our liberties and teach discipline.

Because we are an ALL VOLUNTEER Military Service -- that is why Females can VOLUNTEER for that service.

Males REGISTER for Selective Service when they turn 18 years old. This is not 'joining' -- this is registering -- and this registration is a requirement for all Financial Aid Offerings, registering for further education, etc.
