If he is on any medication, some which make you think you're not hungry, not purposely aiming at dieting, but certain medications will cause you to lose weight.
I was taking lortab for my back problem, and I also was wondering why I lost 9 lbs. the first month. It was the lortab.

I would have him see his doctor and get tested for Diabetes. My mother in law lost 30 pounds in 2 months and after lots of testing the discovered that she is Diabetic.
