My favorite musical is either Chicago or Miss Saigon, because I am obses with history.

Sound of Music!
South Pacific.
My Fair Lady!
Grease.
All have been on the stage and then become movies. In fact, Julie Andrews was the lead in My Fair Lady on stage and Audry Hepburn won the role for film.
BTW: Rent--yuck.

Stage musicals: "Godspell" saw the Philadelphia show in 1973...
and "Phantom of the Opera" saw the Toronto show in 1996 or 97 with Colm Wilkinson - fantastic!
Movies: "The Music Man"

Gotta be Phantom of the Opera (ideally stage, but the movie was OK). The darkness, the swirling operatic sounds, the almost horrifying moral questions of what truly rules a woman's heart (daylight love or darkness love), and the mirror-aspect of Raoul and Erik (the Phantom), the psychology of their similarity, different only in the circumstances of their youth...I find it frighteningly moving and raging and unfair and wonderful, and I'd watch it night after night if it didn't move me quite so much...
