Well, I have not sleep walk for a while... However, I kind of remember that I did it not so long ago. Is difficult to tell because you can't recall the whole event, as whatever you do is part of your dream!! Is scary because the stairs in my house are too stif!! I will have to be careful I guess!!

Sleepwalking, or somnambulism, is a common arousal disorder that is especially prevalent among children. Sleepwalkers (somnambulists) are aroused out of their deep sleep during motor activity, which usually includes, but is not limited to, walking. A sleepwalker can go back to sleep some place other than bed, depending on how far he or she has walked. Sleepwalkers are usually unaware of their activity. Some cases of autonomic (independently functioning) behavior that occur with sleepwalking involve dressing and even eating. What causes sleepwalking is not known, though most people have sleepwalked on at least one occasion. Sleepwalking poses no serious health threat to those who experience it, although the risk of injury, however minor, is a matter of concern. Injury prevention is the primary objective of sleepwalking management.

Sleepwalking is currently being reevaluated in a social and legal context, where the criminal actions of sleepwalkers in certain cases are being judged.

Incidence
Sleepwalking affects approximately 1% to 17% of children and is more frequently seen in boys. The incidence of sleepwalking decreases with age. Although the exact prevalence of sleepwalking in adults is not known, it is estimated to be as high as 10%. The cause for decreased incidence in adults is also not known. Evidence from casework and published sleep diaries indicates that sleepwalkers often feel they are alone with their condition. This is not the case.

Current Research on Sleepwalking
Currently, there is nonspecific medical evidence that suggests that there may be psychiatric issues involved in sleepwalking and that the actions of sleepwalkers in certain cases may not be autonomous and need to be reevaluated.

For example, in Britain, a man actually killed someone while sleepwalking. The issue is whether or not to acquit the defendant on the basis of autonomic actions or to find him insane and, therefore, release him to treatment for mental illness. Subsequently, there is controversy surrounding an individual’s right to plead insanity in cases like this, which complicates our perspective of agency in sleepwalking behavior. Sleepwalking is not currently defined or treated as a mental illness.

Future research may involve the development of a medical-legal definition of sleepwalking. Of course, cases like this are rare, but the media coverage of it is greatly responsible for public recognition of sleepwalking.

I am also a sleepwalker. Haven't done it recently but know that I do on occasion. No one has ever woke me up during any of my times but I have been told many funny stories. Usually though in the end I was guided back to bed. Now that I am on my own I wake up in different rooms.

No I have never sleep walked about, but in my sleep i have woken up and sat upright in bed,and the bute was i started singing and had everyone one woken up.
I have had a bit of bad thing's that happened in front of me and I have never spoken it out to no one, this is what scare's me and it has had me crying in my sleep and everyone's been worried, but still i can't talk about it.i saw my boy friend's head go under the bus tyer's when i was 25.I cannot repeat that sight to no one.it's like stuck on me.
I would'nt wake someone who is sleep walking because you will only scare the life out of them and they could even die on you,i have seen a friend just colap's from being woken up and next knew she was gone.just like that.
the best thing you can do is keep and eye on the person and make sure the person don't go out the main door.
like when i was in boarding school this girl used to sleep walk and damn it she would end up goin to the nun's floor and they have this big bell they ring to wake everyone up at 5.00am and this girl used to go up and ring it at about 1.30or 2.30am and we are allo running to get dressed half sleepy, think back and it does sound funny but not realy, the girl was only 14 and she used to not remember a thing, she used to let her self go to sleep on the long bench under the bell and not know what wasgoin on 2 floor's below the bell room floor.
once she was shaken up awake just to find her self sick for week's with high temperature that never came down no matter what medication was given to her.
all i'd say is don't mess with sleepwalker's honey it's no joke.

I was as a child until I was about11.

I cant remember doing it, but my mother says I would go into their room and give them a kiss. She always took my hand and led me back to bed.The worry was that there was a very steep staircase between my room and my Parents so my Father made a gate to put up at night .I don't do it now.I am in my late 50's

You are not supposed to wake someone who is sleepwalking up, you're just supposed to guide them back to bed. I babysat this little boy once who was sleep walking, and went and peed in the fridge...lol. That was fun explaining to the parents.

My husband sleepwalks and has full conversations with me while doing it. Sometimes, he gets totally naked and falls asleep somewhere in the house. He's even wandered out into the garage. Some day he is going to find himself outside. I try to bring him back to bed but I can't catch him everytime. I think it's funny but he gets pissed!

I sleep walk and talk all the time sometimes I wake up in my closet or even outside. It doesn't hurt the person to wake them up, but it might be easier to try to convince them to go back to bed.

Sweet Dreams ;)

Not necessarily... If In your mind you think it would do harm, then No! No I would not wake that person. To my best advice it is best to wake that person but not in an abrupt matter as that person could endanger themselves or someone in their sleepwalk adventure.
