And I've got news for you, most of that is pure profit. It's ok to make a profit. But they are raping people and they know it.

Society likes to hold up doctors, dentists and other such professionals as these great people. The truth is, most of them are part of a system that puts money far before the people and their health...though some of these professionals take oaths. According to the New England Journal of medicine, over 250,000 people each year die (that's in the USA alone) because the doctor misdiagnosed their disease.

I put dentists and doctors in the same sinking boat. They are all about the money so get second opinions and watch your back.

I went to one dentist to get an opinion on my tooth. He said, cavity. I was moving to LA so put it off till I arrived there. The dentist in LA told me that I needed a root canal. I told him, my other dentist said I didn't. When I said that, he looked like a deer caught in the head lights. He said, ok, we'll try a filling first...he even threw in the more expensive stuff at regular price...Gee I wonder why? Turns out, all it needed was a filling. Tooth has been fine ever since and that was 7 years ago. This is why, among other bad experiences, I distrust most of these "professionals."

My current dentist started on the front tooth, but refused to finish it until all the other teeth were fixed. She got me for a couple grand. She was doing dishonestly, it turns out...but how to prove this? I called the ADA and told them...no one would return my call!! They stick together!! And don't think i'm making that up. I called them 5 times. NO ONE RETURNED MY CALL.

My sister's new dentist insisted on taking 15 xrays, for a cleaning. I'm just saying...do not think that dentists are somehow good and morally upright, just because they are held in high regard. MANY of them will play games. See, they have to have that Mercedes..and one for the wife, and some for the kids. If you find a good dentist, keep him/her. There is a nightmare of very UNPROFESSIONAL professionals out there. But will you ever catch him/her in the act?

Just because they are educated, drive nice cars and have standing in the community, doesn't mean they won't financially rape you and your whole family...if you give them the opportunity. Doctors are worse because they are in bed with drug companies. They hand out scripts like water when they know it's hurting people's systems.

Maybe your dentist a good person. I don't know. Heh, ten to one he's doing a job on you or your insurance. Just think how hard you/your parents have to work to line this guys Mercedes with rich Corinthian leather.

See, doctors, dentists, etc. feel they have the right to be rich and they do not do as they should, they do as they can get away with it. That is why you're paying 5 grand for something that surely doesn't cost anything near that much.

My braces are $4,400 for a 20 month treatment. My daughter's braces were $4,800. She had 2 years of bite and arch work and 3 years of braces. Straight teeth are well worth the money you spend.

I don't exactly remember, but I'm sure they weren't that much. I would get some other estimates from other orthodontists in the area. You could ask neighbours, friends, or search in the yellow pages. Also, if you have a dental plan through your parents/your work, that would bring down most of the cost. My parents plan cut about half the cost!

Hope this helps!

That sounds about right. Can the orthodontist get your teeth fixed in one phase? Sometimes it takes two phases of treatments and then it is twice as much. If you have dental insurance they may pay $1,000 - $2,000 towards your braces but that is usually it. I would advise you to get a second opinion just so you know the price is fair, but it sounds ok to me. (I have 3 children in braces right now!!! ouch....)

I have Invisalign braces, and they cost me $1500 out of pocket. Insurance covered an additional $2000.

I am paying $5600.00 for everything from the consultation to retainers and follow ups. When I went for my consultation they told me the price and presented several payment options.
Make sure they tell you what is included the price. I didn't have to pay for x rays, but I needed to have extractions done. Those were done by my dentist and insurace covered them but I sill had a co-pay.

I had braces about 15 years ago and they were about $3000 then, so I don't think that's unrealistic.

Sounds about right to me.. You can try to find a better and you may, but if your area is like mine, the more expensive orthodontist is also the better and is well worth the extra cost...
