do you want spices or seasonings, b/c that's what garlic and onion powder are. either way here are some things to start with: cumin, curry(pick the heat level you prefer), cinnamon, coriander, fennel, oregano, tyme, cayenne pepper, lemon pepper, dill, nutmeg...also just walk down the spice isle. if anything catches your eye, try it in a new recipe.

Curry, lemongrass, basil, oregono, cinnamon, bay leaf, all spice, cayenne pepper, chile pepper, cumin, tarragon, mustard, nutmeg, rosemary, thyme.... there are many to choose from. The best way to choose your spices to judge it by the food you regularly eat. If you are an american food girl, hamburgers, mac and cheese, meatloaf, roast beef, etc. you would basically stick with what you have. Now if you tend towards more ethnic foods, such as italian, indian, chinese, etc. you want a wide variety of spices such as the ones i listed above.

These are my top ten Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Oregano, Italian seasoning, seasoned salt, parsley, bay leaves, basil, cayenne, cumin. Spices are pricey so don't forget to check out the mexican food aisle, often you can get baggies of spices for way cheaper than the jars in the baking aisle.

I use a lot of oregano, basil, and thyme. I also use a lot of season salt and red pepper. But it depends on what you cook a lot of too. If you cook a lot of chicken, then you would want to get some poultry seasoning. It is really good. If you cook a lot of red meats, then steak seasoning is a good thing to have around too :-)

curry powder, basil or oregano (if you like pasta dishes) and maybe some lemon pepper seasoning. Then go from there as you try out different recipes.
