I am a Christian, and have been one for my whole life. My questions is for Muslims. Your faith is based on "peace." I know that almost 99% of Muslims completely do not agree with the acts of terrorism being committed by their people. They claim that most people are not like that and that most Muslims are peaceful people. However, what I don't understand is that these normal, peaceful people are still reading the Quran which states to "kill the infidels," (literally, the Quran in Surah 9:5 states that all Muslims must fight and slay the pagans...in this case, meaning Christians, Jews, what have you.) I don't understand what type of God would condone hate and killing. Please clarify.

its funny how you asked a question bout Muslims but every one was quick to say the Christians did the same thing......Christians this Christians that (THAT WASN'T THE QUESTION PEOPLE) from what i see or hear or read Christians aren't the ones that flew planes into the twin towers...or pentagon......Christians aren't the ones constantly bombing innocent people with their suicide bomber

i say read the question
i know i didn't answer the question either but i just wanted to make a point

Well, first I would say you have a rather poor translation of the Quran.

Second, I would say as well you must look at each work and phrase in the Quran in terms of the full context, including the period in which it was uttered as well as the contect of actual actions by the prophet Mohommed (who spared those who had been actively trying to kill his people for years and years). This includes realization that Muslims do not consider Jews or Christians to be Pagans at all.

Third, I would point out that many verses in the Holy Bible have been interpreted in precisely the way in which you are interpreting this Surah (Exodus 22:18 comes to mind).

Which is just another way of saying that most Musilms--like most Christians--are not fundamentalists.

Thank God.

Dear Sister,
Be fair. Why did you really read the verse 9:5? Would you for my sake please go to www.hti.umich.edu/k/koran and find out what the verses before and after what you quoted say?

Remember also that we have 1.3 billion Muslims. THAT is thirteen followed by eight zeros or 1,300,000,000. If only one percent of the Muslims were terrorists we would have this many terrorists: 13,000,000. Would you be fair and tell me is it right to blame 99 percent of the Muslims for what less than a small fraction of one percent do in the name of Islam?

Why do you ignore the many verses such as the following one:

Quran 5:32 Killing one innocent is tantamount to killing ALL HUMANITY, saving one life is as if you saved ALL HUMANITY.

The context is the murder of Abel by Cain.

How can you ignore this verse?

Quran 2:62: Believers, Christians, Jews, Sabeans and all those who believe in One God and the Day of Judgment and do good works have nothing to fear or to regret. ....

This is reepated in 5:69 almost word for word.

Quran 22:39 says FiGHT to preserve churches, synagogues, mosques and all places of worship as the name of God is taken in all these places and are all good places. I am using my own words here. You use the Quran and find out the actual words.

Quran 10:99 says "IF Allah willed it, all nations would be Muslim. Would you THEN USE FORCE?" HOw can you ignore that?

Please, Jesus taught you not to judge, lest YOU be judged. So, please find out the facts.

Know this that the immediate verse you quoted from Surah 9, which is the only Surah or Chapter in the Quran which is severe and does not begin with the announcement of Mercy of the Almighty among all the 114 Surahs is the only one quoted time and again. and the verse immediately next to the one you quoted, which says "Unbelieving pagans are ignorant people, if they seek peace, escort them out of harms way and take them to safety" IS NEVER QUOTED?

You can imagine ordering the soldiers to spare the pagans who are not fight back, but to escort them to safety from the battleground? Is that not a verse that people should quote also when they next verse is declaring all out war against those who attack Muslims. Why should Muslims not attack those who are attacking to kill them? Why the double standards?

Please know that it was all out war at the time this Surah was revealed. The Pre-Islamic Arabs had broken treaties time and again and attacked Muslims time after time without provocation. The verse you quoted clearly refers to THOSE TIMES and THOSE PLACES. It is important to be honest and fair.

I hope you read the Quran and see that the war verses are read in context. Remember that our Prophet never fought ANY CHRISTIANS AT ALL. He only fought those Jewish tribes that sided with his pagan Arab cousins in an ongoing battle.

BE FAIR if you are a true Christian and do not judge us unjustly.

I hope you consider my response.

I'm not Muslim, I am a Christian, and I'd say that more than 1% of Christians condone killing. Some Christians are responsible for killing abortion doctors and killing people in abortion clinics that they bomb. I read many Christian publications that backed the elections of George Bush because he is doing the "Christian" thing, which happens to be killing thousands of innocent Iraqis, and he has claimed in the past to have a direct line to God. I'm only letting you know this because you seem to be putting the blame of evil onto Muslims, when those of us Christians are associated with horrible deeds that even include the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, and the Holocaust.

All of you attempting to attack Christianity, lay off. The Catholic Church committed some terrible atrocities in the Middle Ages, yes, but they weren't justified in the Bible. The difference between the Qu'ran and the Bible is that the Qu'ran justifies against people of other religions and that the Bible doesn't, even though God reserves the right to wreak vengeance upon the unrighteous personally. I've seen some of the verses from the Qu'ran and I've seen how violent and generalized they are. Many Muslims respond that we're taking verses out of context, but what context can you put "kill the infidels" in? Didn't Muhammad kill a lot of people because he believed they inhibited the spread of their religion? If he can do it, then why can't other Muslims?

those infiedels or pagans in the verse were already declaring war on the Muslims and prophet Muhammad (pbuh)..those are the enemies of Muslimswho were fighting them for years..but read this verse to see the whole picture:
Allah does not forbid you to treat kindly and act equitably towards those who have neither fought you in the matter of religion nor driven you out of your homes. Indeed Allah loves the just.' He only forbids you to take for friends those who fought you in the matter of religion, and drove you out of your homes, and cooperated with others in your expulsion. Those who take them for friends are indeed the wrongdoers.' "60, 8-9"
So for peacefull unbelievers we must treat them kindly and with justice according to this verse above.

"Say: we believe in God and in what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Abraham, Isma'il: Isaac, Jacob and The Tribes, and in (the Books) given to Moses, Jesus and the Prophets, from their Lord: We make no distinction between one and another, among them, and to God do we bow our will (in Islam)." (Qur'an, Al-Imran 3:84) where is the killings

I think its supposed to mean when they are attacked by the non-believers or something like that, but don't quote me on it. They still have to live peacefully alongside everyone else.
