Its not really about OUR freedom, its about our governments freedom, and its at odds with the world. These people are not trying to kill Americans, they're trying to get our ATTENTION! Our government and our policies really intrude on other countries liberties and progress, but we don't hear about that. Of course they shouldn't have crashed planes into us and killed thousands of innocents, but these people have no voice, they feel like violence is the only way someones going to listen. Our president has turned their plea into a war cry by telling us they want to take democracy away. These people want to be left alone to their own ways, its American intrusion that pushes them. They want us out of their country COMPLETELY. We have fiscal investments over there, so we stay. This pushes them against our troops. The more we kill, the more injustice they feel and the more empowered they feel to fight back. They are fighting for THEIR country. THEIR freedoms. But alas, we have made quite a mess, and are now obligated to fix what we broke. We'll be over there till the end of time. I support our troops, they are brave and willing to sacrifice for ME. I cannot fathom a proper "thank you" for this, but I believe continuing my quest for happiness is enough for them. Thats all they want for us, and thats the reality that keeps them going. But for all of this, I think they have been put in a position of danger that is unneccessary. It is too late to cry "Bring them home". The damage has been done, and they must stay to see it out to the end. Arab nations want our hands out of their pockets and their country. We want to stay and protect our investments from their newly installed leaders. Our troops are sent to do this. Saudis own one third of our economy. If that gets shaky, then we will buckle at the knees and will suffer and struggle to recover.

Only SOME Americans think we can win in Iraq. A lot of us, me included, believe it was a mistake to go there in the first place and that going there has only destabilized the region further. Only the deluded think that we could go over there, knock over the dictator, impose western style democracy through puppet leaders, unify the 4 disperate populations (shiite, sunni, turkamen and kurds) and walk away leaving a stable, western-style state.
NOT!
What we will leave behind is more like another Iraq than a Viet Nam. More like the dissolution of Yugoslavia after Tito than anything we imagined. A breeding ground for future terrorism where there was none before. Plus, we will have left lots of individuals there with real and imagined gripes against the US, making them more likely to engage in terrorism.
No, only fools thought we could go into Iraq and do something constructive. And, I would say that Bush I was no fool--which is why he pulled back from Iraq. Unfortunately, he sired and raised a fool--the fool who rushed in where others dared to tread, Bush II.

because we are arrogant.
we believe our way is alway right, good and the best thing for everyone.
Ironically, it is this belief that has started or current conflict in the first place.
Joekenorer said it above.
In truth they are not trying to kill americans.
they are trying to get our attention.
they have been trying to do this for years.
Well before 9/11.
The thing about 9/11 is that they were finally sucessful.
We can not win on our current course in Iraq.
despite what the majority believes,
This battle cannot be won with guns.

It's not like can we win in Iraq. The reason were there is to wipe out as many terrorists as we can. We are at war with "A culture" not a country.

well, the USA is not trying to "win" in Iraq
they are trying to prepare and establish the Iraqui government and people to a condition where the U.S. forces can leave it all to them
what would constitute "win" in Iraq anyway
and what would constitute "lose"
"read about Vietnam"
you condescending attitude is not helpful
I have read much about Vietnam, and, I was alive and very politically involve during that war
that war we easily could have won
there was land to take, a state to oppose
we chose not to "win" that war because there was no American consensus on the value of winning that war, and some concern that winning would have terrible consequences
"read about vietnam" indeed

we can win any conventional war anytime and anywhere in the world and we proved it. but war isn't conventional anymore. the bigger your army is, in an unconventional war, the more likely you are to lose. as in nam ........ the same will be for iraq .........i fear.
in a conventional war, the one with the most modern weaponry will defintely win. in a headon confrontation with the enemy, the planes and missiles soften the resistance. the troops and the tanks on the ground clear up whatever resistance is there.
now come the hard part. what you gonna do after? can you win the hearts and minds of the local population. keep this in mind, we are the invaders. with every door you kicked open in the middle of the night, with every local citizen that you stripsearch, rifle butted, forced to eat dirt, with every villages that you demolished .......... you are making more and more enemies. the insurgency will defintely swell and these people without sophisicated weapons will responds in anyway they can and that includes sucide bombing. what do you call these peoples? terrorists ........ no, i call them martyr, heroes ........ wouldn't you have done the same thing if your country is invaded and you were one of the citizen, strip naked, rifle butted and forced on the ground to eat dirt.
this is the unconventional part of war. our soldiers are well fed, well paid, well armed ......... these resistance are not paid, they eat whatever and uses whatever means to fight. they holds the moral high ground, this is their land. once you lost the hearts and minds of the population ........... you lost the war.
it happened in nam and history is repeating itself again.

Bush just changes the definition of "win" every time things get worse. Also now conservatives are trying to justify this utter failure by saying there were "two iraq wars" we won the first one, and the iraqis have to win the second one. WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!
Matt B. Are you saying that the president and military commanders let a terrorist killer (al Sadr) go because they were afraid about what the newspapers might say? What a wimp your president is....

Most people don't think we can win but I'll say this, if we would allow our military leaders to lead, they could win in Iraq. As long as we allow the media and politicians so much influence, then we won't win. Look at Fallujah, we had the place surrounded and could have won a sweeping victory but we didn't because of the politicians and media painting this picture that we would have to attack a holy place. This building was full of weopons and terrorist. It should have been destroyed without a second thought.

We already won.
It took only 1 month for the US forces to depose Saddam. Mission Accomplished.
Ever since then, the US has been providing support to the Iraqi governments as it is being set up.
3 elections have been successfully waged.
The fighting now consists between Sunni and Shia. The United States is not actively fighting but is now on a defensive posture as it provides logistical support to the Iraqi military.
The United States won in Vietnam too. It was only after the Democrats decided to pull out of Vietnam in 1975 did the democratic government fall to the Communists (notice the Russians and Chinese didn't cut and run and abandon their allies)
The United States military never loses.
But, politicians can make things a lot more difficult .

triumphing the wars skill triumphing political factors at homestead. in case you additionally could make human beings afraid and produce up the bogeyman terrorists, then the sheep will vote for you. How do you think of an fool like Bush gained in 2004? Iraq and Afghanistan are a catastrophe. issues are worse of than ever earlier, hundreds of lives lost in ineffective, there's a stronger hatred of u.s. than ever earlier.

We can win in Iraq but with multiple strategies. I was involved with one called operation Handclasp that built orphanages and school and med station etc. Let me see if I can make a point here; There are two reasons why the Iraqi women walk 10 paces behind their men. The obvious is that their religion says to, the other is land mines. (and we don't use mines that way)
