At my high school just outside of Cleveland, our towns fast food strip area, with all the big ones like Taco Bell, Hardees, McDonald's ect, are less than a 5 minute walk from our school. I can actually see those big tall signs like the big M from one of my classrooms.

At lunch break, basically the whole school just goes to the fast food part, and it gets so busy because there is catholic high school just near us, and all there kids get off at the same time as us for lunch. I seriously don't even know why we have a caf in our school since it's like so empty at lunch. Our school is big so it's split into two lunch breaks, period 3 for grades 9/10 and 4 for 11/12. I know as a fact that the caf is just as empty on both breaks.

So do you think this is why kids are so over weight? Because schools are too close to the fast food joints?

no, first off if the school made it policy that all the kids eat on campus then it wouldn't matter where the fast food joints were.. next.. that 5 minute walk to the fast food joints is more exercise than most kids get in this nation on a daily basis.. also how are kids buying that fast food? it's not like the majority of highschool kids have a job.. so where is that money coming from.. oh wait, that's right. it's the parents... I'm not saying that fast food joints are helping the problem.. but, especially at a young age, kids don't just magically appear at them.. parents are taking their kids to these places or are buying other junk food for home because it is more convenient.. couple that with the fact that kids aren't spending much time outside playing sports and what not anymore, instead they are watching TV, playing on the computer and playing video games... it's no wonder some states are reporting as much as 40% of their children in the at risk or overweight categories...

There are a lot of reasons that children are overweight these days. One reason is fast food, but a lot of it comes from lack of excersice.
At my school, there are a lot of overweight kids, but we don't even get off campus lunch. Instead, kids gorge on the unhealthy snacks and food they serve in the cafeteria. I think that if kids are fat, it's not because of what they eat for lunch. It's part of it, but not all of it. People are fat because they have an unhealthy lifestyle.

not really...I think childhood obesity is caused partly by kids being less active and parents not limiting what there children are eating. I ate oreos and mcdonalds when I was a kid and was never fat. I didn't sit in fromt of the tv or computer all day or night.

Although I can certainly understand the temptation.... I do not believe that fast food restaurants are the reason for over weight children...or people in general. People buying the food and eating it excessively and not exercising is the reason they become over weight.

Yes and no. I think the parents are not making their children eat properly. The parents are the leaders. The children I see are always thin. most kid's are skinny. Few are fat! Even with the fast food places. It's all about genetics.

fast food places now have less fattening items on their menus you can choose from.
i think the problem is mostly from lack of excercise.
parents don't help either by their own diets and sedentary lifestyles.
a student like yourself needs to decide to be healthy and act accordingly.
it is much more fun to go thru life in good shape and energetic than to be a fat lazy slob.

No. The root of the problem is in the house and parents attitude.
