My six year old has a cut on his face where another six year old rammed his bike into it. A neighbor saw it happen and brought him home, it was bleeding pretty bad, so I took him to the ER to see if he needed stiches or a tetnus shot. should I file a police report, and can I make the other kids parents pay the doctor bill? The neighbor that saw it said that my son was not fighting or doing anything wrong.

The neighbor that brought him home told me that this was not accidental, and that the kid in question is mean to other children too. It's not really about the money, although I can't afford it. It's just that I want to ensure that this won't happen again

It depends on your parenting skills.

You definitely need to contact the family of this child. And they have a choice to go through legal proceedings and pay for medical bills or give an apology and pay for medical bills. And this should not be an open ended agreement, PERIOD. I would get a case number from the police and have the witness sign a statement of what happened regardless so if this happens again there is a paper trail.

If he were my kid.... they got to duke it out. No confrontation, no respect.

No, I really don't think you should. Was it an accident? If it was I'd say no. If it wasn't an accident I wouldn't worry unless you can't afford the doctor's bills. It was not the parent's fault your son got hurt by their son. They are probably great parents and all kids make mistakes regardless on what their parent told them. Would you feel comfortable paying the doctor's bill if it was switched around even though you knew in your heart your child was wrong but mad a mistake? I guess what I'm trying to say is if this is really that big of a deal to you and you really can not pay the bill do it. I wouldn't even in I couldn't pay the bill but that's just me.

I doubt that filing a police report will do anything, the other kid is a bully, bullys come along in just about everyone's life. However, I would call this kid's parents and tell them what happened, that you have a witness and that you think they should pay the doctor/ER bill. If they refuse, consult with your witness to see if he/she is willing to spend a day in court and then go file a law suit in small claims court.

I'm not sure if I would go to the police, but I would talk with the other child's parents. They really can't control what their child does when they're not there, so I'd hesitate to ask them to pay the doctor bill. If the situation was reversed, would you offer to pay the bill? Plus, why file a police report? What would the charges be?

I would talk to the other child's parents. You, I would ask them to help with the doctor's bill. Have you seen Judge Judy? There was a mother on there that took another mother t court for the same thing. The Judge ruled for the kid that got hurts.

I would definately file a police report. what if there are instances in the future? At least it would be on record.
The parents should really pay the medical bills. If it was an accident, maybe not so much but if it were deliberate then yes.
hope your son is better

Do you want these neighbors seriously mad at you? And your kids still playing together in the neighborhood? Ok, so maybe they will pay the bill if you ask them, maybe not. Think about your future relationship with these people. This is how really bad stuff gets started.

go over and talk to the parents ....maybe you should even have the kids in front so they can tell their side of the story...I wouldnt go as far as a police report...after all they are only six. But I would like to think that the parents will offer to pay your boys hospital bills.

Yes i would file a report. Have them go to the childs parent's home and inform them of what happen. What happen's if he does this again to another child. He will keep doing it cause he was not displined for anything. His parents will take it put with ther son, exspecially when the pay the medical bill. Your son did nothing wrong. Inform the neighbour and get a written statement from him, and a statement from the ER and the cost.

I think you should talk to the child's parents first. This way it isn't like you are attacking them with the police. Ask them to pay a portion of the medical bills. If there is no compliance, then seek further action, maybe a small claims lawsuit.
Good luck Hon!
