It has a collar with his name Rex. But he was dirty so he must live far away i took him to a hospital to see if he was chiped but he wasn't i put up papers to see if they would recognize him with no luck. I was thinking of either keeping him or giving him to the humane society... I don't want to keep him because i feel bad because i know he has a family looking for him somewere but i don't want to give him up because i am afraid that no one will adopt him and they will put him to sleep...

what are your opinions? What do you think I should do and why?

We took in a stray a couple of years ago. We did the same thing...looked for signs, checked for a chip. We ended up keeping her and loving her just like the other dogs we've had since pups. Older dogs do have a harder time being adopted because people want puppies or because there is more care associated with older dogs. If you think you can give him a quality life, I'm sure that he will fill your life with happiness.

I think you should keep him and put an add up on the computer or outside.what im afraid of is if you put it up for adoption someone who could care less about the dog might just hurt the poor thing or if you don't put it up for adoption the family that once had the dog will miss it.(I love dogs so of course i would tell you this)for the time being just keep it and take care
of the cute thing.just don't put it out on the street or let it run away or anything cause it will really be lost.give the poor thing all your love and support and everything will be alright.(I'm pretty sure the poor thing is thankful that someone like you took him in,that was very nice of you ,you know.please have fun with your new friend.bye! ^-^

Give him to the Humane Society. They will clean him up, give him a full vet check AND try to find his rightful owner.

His rightful owner might have even tried to find him AT the shelter, so they may have record of someone looking for this dog.

HE won't be put to sleep. The HUmane Society is not a kill shelter. They will try to find his true owner, and if not, they will find a home for him.

I think you should put on the newspaper that you found a dog, also go to the police station because some dog owners when they loose their dogs they usually call the police and police take notices, also go to the dog pound and tell them u found a dog. If you dont have any luck just dont give him away because they will put him to sleep. He is lucky to find you to take care of him. I really hope u find the dogs owner.

P.s. put posters up saying you found a dog but dont mentione the name of the , if the owner sees your poster he will call you and tell you the dogs name

Good luck and i thank you for taking care of that poor lost dog

The animal shelter in my neighborhood has an area where you can list dogs that are lost or found, without having to turn them in. If I were you, I would keep the dog, and list it at all the dog shelters you can find in the area. Also, check your local paper for lost dogs. Good Luck! :)

You can set something up with your local humane society where you foster the dog until a family is found that wants to adopt him. In many cases you actually get to screen the prospective parents yourself. I had a friend who did this, but she ended up keeping the dog for herself b/c she became so attached.

You could also try ads in the paper, call local radio stations - they'll air found pet announcements at no charge. Put up ads in local vet offices. If no one claims him and you can't keep him, you'll need to take him to a shelter.

try locating an SPCA, unless there is a serious problem with the dog, they don't put them down or try to find a " No-Kill " shelter. Sheriff's Departments can USually give you numbers or know who to ask......

if you don't want to keep it, make sure you give him to the aspca or other no kill shelter. his family probably didn't want him to get lost. post ads online he might have traveled very far away from his family.
