We plan to take her to the vet in a week but is there anything we can do to start the process of getting rid of this or ease her pain?

you should take it to a vet before it gets out of hand. I don't think there are home remedies but then again I'm sure i am wrong.

The vet will likely prescribe a series of insecticide dips along with medication. The dog's area, bedding, etc. will need to be disinfected. You need to find out what type of mange the dog has as there are several. Your best bet is to take the dog to the vet as soon as possible to determine the type of mange so it can be treated properly.Generally, veterinarians recommend treatment with a dip containing Amitraz. The dip is repeated every 7-10 days. Although the dog may respond well to the dip and look normal, dipping must be continued until negative skin scrapings are found consistently for a few weeks. The dipping may have side effects. Sleepiness and itching are common for 24 hours after the dip. Some dogs many experience decreased body temperature, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite, excitability, staggering, or other personality changes. If any of these side effects occur you should contact your veterinarian immediately.
Take the dog to the vet soon!

There are two types of mange. Demodectic and sarcopic. She needs have a skin scraping to determine what type of mange she has before being treated. Please keep her away from any other pets you may have. Sarcopic mange can be passed on to humans as well.

Get her to a vet ASAP. Mange can be a serious, and even a life threatening condition. I would not wait a week for her to see a vet. Sorry to be so meladramatic, but you have to take mange seriously.

If you can not get her to a vet sooner, than go to your local library or order, a copy of: Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide To Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. It explains mange, both kinds, very well and how to treat them at home, but it is too lengthy to type out here. Go to pages 301 and 302.

Best to you and your new found dog.

There are at least 3 types of mange. The type found in adults dogs is commonly caused by scrabies, and can be transmited to humans. (Be sure to wash the dogs bedding, avoid sleeping with the dog, or letting in on the couch.) Scrabies in humans only causes limited itching as it can't reproduce on humans. You might buy a lime base shampoo/dip like Lymdyp, a flea dip, and collar. (Flea allergies can look a lot like mange.)

Note that malnutrition will cause a dog's hair to fall out. (Or it can trigger/lead to any, or all types of mange. In any case I'd start feeding the dog a little extra in the way of fatty acids, and vitamins. Oils like cod liver oil, or fax seed oil. High protein things like hard boiled eggs. Most veggies like carrots, broccoli, and fruits like apples. Even things normally bad for a dog like fat trimmings, and teaspoon of vegetable oil. Just remember not to over do it. Her stomach isn't use to rich foods. Also avoid getting her in the habit of eating from the table. If you are feed her the extra fat off something put it in the bowl before or after your meal.

Be sure to take her to a vet, and ask him/her to set out a diet plan for the next couple of months. Also if he says it's mange make sure he says which type, and write it down.

Mange - Not much you can do until they test her to see what type of mange she has. Some types are curable others are not. Don't let her around other pets until she is treated.

Mal-Nutrition - Feed chicken and rice in small portions 2-3 times per day.

Good luck I have nursed several dogs back to health.

Lots of people use home remedies on mange mites and only end up hurting the dog, sometimes poisoning them. Please take the dog to the vet to get proper treatment. If you're looking to ease some itching, oatmeal baths work well. Good luck with the new pup.

My dog had mange and we struggled with it for a long time.

Once you do get to the vet, try to get the oral liquid. It was expensive, but it worked for us when the chemical dips did not. If I could, I would give my dog back the year of his life that we wasted on trying to find easy ways of getting rid of the mange.
