How many Canadians support the war in Afghanistan?

Well let me start by saying that I worked on the Canadian base in Kabul for 18 months. First you have to seperate the American missions there from ISAF (NATO forces that Canada is part or). Canada is there to help stablize a country that is a friggin mess. I don't agree with why the Americans went in there but if Canada were to pull out now you cannot imagine how many people would die. Canada by the way is very respected there. Most Afghans know the differences and appriciate the Canadians. Also the Canadian military does a lot more then just patrol the streets. They have done so much to rebuild this devistated country. The help with infrastructure, education, rebuilding wells, orphanages. I had the opportunity to visit some villiages and orphanages with the military and it was so amazing what they were doing there. These people would be drinking swamp water if not for the Canadians rebuilding their wells. Also now that I have met women in Afghanistan I know what would happen to them if we left and the Taliban or any other military took over. If we leave now, they die. That simple. One of my favorate visits was to a girls orphanage that the Canadian military funded and protected from bandits and other horrible people. The thought of what would happen to those sweet little girls if we left just horrifies me. As it is they have a chance in life. Trust me being an orphan girl in Afghanistan is about on par in society with being a pig. For Canada to pull out now would be grossly irresponsible. They have to stay and see it through now, as do the other NATO nations.

While it would be easy to say anything the Americans get us involved with has traditionally only been in their best interests, Canada and the U.N. are another story. Because of the oceans between us(North America) and continental Europe, we don't have the history of being invaded and at times have a hard time relating to areas of the world where countries have been invaded with regularity over the years. If we forego our U.N. obligations because some of our troops give up their lives fighting battles that indirectly impact us here, then Canada could not expect respect from the rest of the world. There could come a day that we need peacekeepers in our own country (Quebec for example in the late 60's early 70's). Native blockades. If Canada can help out internationally, we should and must. If we BLINDLY follow the U.S., then any thought of anyone differentiating between Americans and Canadians will be lost. Yes, I believe we need to be in Afghanistan, No, we don't need to be in Iraq(yet).

I don't necessarily support our politicians original intent on the fight in Afghanistan, but we're there. To leave now, would have terrorists begin to hunt us down as have happened to the Americans. They won't forget that we were there, not for a thousand years. The only difference leaving now would make, is where we're going to take casualties. There or here. My choice is there. The Armed Forces personnel currently deployed, need our support, not domestic squabbles. We've actually been fairly fortunate, casualty wise ( none would be preferable). The Americans although not deployed to nearly as volatile regions as Canadians, have racked up far more casualties. I recently read that American and British forces in the region they are deployed, have a 1 in 4 chance of sustaining a casualty versus where the Canadian and Dutch are fighting. Ours is a 3 in 4 odd. That may speak volumes on the caliber of the military leadership and those under them for our people.We're in it now and historically, and this is fact, no Canadian Regiment has EVER retreated from a battle. Support it or not, it's our only course now. Blame ALL the politicians, not just those from one party.

According to a survay on Canada Am 52% of Canadians support the war in Afghanistan. I do not but I support our soldiers who are doing their job and going over there dispite their misgivings and the fear of death. I also support our Prime Minister for trying to do the right thing. People seem to forget that Stephan Harper was not the one to send the troops over to Afghanistan in the first place,Paul Martin was and Mr. Harper is only continuing with the cause that the Liberals got us into.

It's not a war. It's a mission. A mission to bring peace to Afghanistan. Force isn't the way to do it. I don't support it.

I may not supprt the war, but i support the soldiers, especially now. My brother in law just got his orders to ship out and he and my sister have barely been together since they got married 2 years ago, now he is off to a war zone.

Think we should get out now while we can.
The Russians tried and failed and the Yanks never learn from their mistakes, Vietnam,Iraq etc etc.
They we do anything for a buck, got to keep that defence budget up.

I still can't even come to terms with the fact that we are even involved in that! I am anti-war, but I hope that our troops stay safe and that their mission is soon accomplished! PEACE!
