Most canned food has less preservatives than other forms of long term storage.

Older cans had high amounts of lead and tin, but newer cans are coated with plastic or wax on the inside so there is ver little dissolved metals from the cans.

To say if they are healthy,, you would have to define healthy. To me healthy means low in preservatives and not over high in fat. A can of green beans certainly meets that criteria, but a can of Hash certainly does not. Healthy is a trcky word and most AMericans seem to be neglecting the concept of balance when they define healthy. A slice of pizza is healthy to me, but a whole pizza is not.

Lastly, there has been reports that canned foods store less vitamins than fresh. The fact that most canned food is in fact cooked may lead to that conclusion. To answr yes or no is hard, but in general canned food can be healthy although most (including me) would say that it is less healthy than eating a fresh counterpart.

That's kind of a vague question. It depends on what it is. The good thing about canned food is that it has a nutrition label right on the side. You can look.

A lot of canned vegetables don't have as many health benefits as fresh vegetables. A lot of canned fruit adds a lot of sugar, which isn't very healthy.

Look on the label. That's why it's there.

not as healthy as fresh food but i wouldnt say really unhealthy. As with all foods that are preserved a certain amount of sugar and/or salt is used. In olden days sugar and salt were used to preserve food and wasnt moaned about like today, i think that theres so much nice stuff around its harder to not eat the nice stuff and opt for the healthier stuff. As for any germs the food is heated to such a high temperature that there shouldnt be any, in that way it could be classed as healthier!

I do my own canning, so I can answer this from experience.

Commercially processed canned fruits and vegetables ARE healthy with the exception of the added salt and sugar. AND ALL canned fruits and vegetables that require having their skins removed (blanched) have a lower vitamin and mineral content than fresh. Plus, vitamins are broken down by canning because of the high heat used to sterilize the product. (Water bath)

Lets talk one by one about the nutrients found in our fresh food including fruits and vegetables. The nutritional value of protein content is not affected by heat treatment leaving canned food a convenient alternatives to fresh-cooked food since they need a lot less time to prepare. Canned poultry, meat and fish deliver as much protein as comparable amounts of these same foods you cook yourself. Canned fish, poultry, meat, canned legumes, including soybeans deliver as much protein as comparable amounts of these same foods you cook yourself.

I don't know when the last time canned food visited the doctor, but I would assume it received a clean bill of health.

Sure but if you are watching your salt intake inspect the labels. A lot of canned goods are high in salt content.
