Electricity is sometimes called juice. And in a way it flows just like juice (water) in a pipe. There must be pressure (voltage) to push (and pull) the juice for AC (alternating current) which is supplied to your house. There must be a pump (generator) and work must be done to operate the pump (water turbine driven by water falling at a dam or steam turbine driven by steam produced in a coal-burning boiler). The generator works similar to a piston pump that reciprocates pushing electrons into the distribution wires then sucking them back out 60 times every second for 60 Hz AC power. Just as your house has a water meter to measure how much water you use, electricity enters your house through a mast holding up the wires from the street pole then passes through a power meter that measures how much electricity you use. If you run a 1,000 watt electric heater for one hour you will use one kilowatt-hour of electricity that will cost about 10 cents in some areas. The power company delivers very high voltage electricity to the electric grid that distributes it to the various cities and towns they serve. The voltage is reduced at substations using electrical transformers. There usually will be a smaller transformer on or near your street to reduce the power to the final voltage you need for your house.

Electricity is produced in a power station by means of a turning stator that moves a magnetic coil inside a coil of wire. this induces a flow of electrons that is then sent out across high voltage wires onto a national network. from this network various substations step down the voltage of the high voltage wire to a more useable voltage that is transmitted across wires for a local network, such as a town or a city section. from their it enters a transformer that may feed an even smaller area such as a block of houses or two or three houses. the wires from this transformer go directly to the house fuse box. from there it is transmitted to individual circuits in the house which then transmit power to individual outlets or fixtures

The power comkes from the company at veryhigh voltages through conductors (wires) usually about 18,000 volts at the transformer near your hous then steps down to 240 volts then enters your house through the service (breaker box) Then the power is sent through breaker to our lights and receptacles.
