mid 70's- I remember they went to 25 cents, then up to 35 cents in the early 80's. We thought it was a big deal at the time ( I was in Jr High).
Could not find a link with the exact year, but here is a link that has a little info about the price of a call, years and adjusted for inflation. Kind of interesting...

1951 “Coin Box Phone Calls Go To 10 Cents Today: . . . 4000 maintenance men [go] into the field today to administer the coup de grâce to the 5-cent phone call at 92,000 PAY STATIONS in the city, 15, 000 more in Nassau and southern Westchester Counties and an additional 28,000 in the rest of the state.”—New York Times, 6 January, page 1

Well that depends on where you are. You see in my home town we have a small local phone company and our pay phones are still only a nickle!!

To answer your question really depends upon where you are but most of the big phone companies started charging 15 cents after the AT&T break up in 1984.

Does that help?

Where I lived in Pennsylvania, it was either 1984 or 1985. I remember I did 18 months in jail and when I was released, it shocked me that they went from 10 to 25 cents.

In my state, about 1994. Went to make a phone call where I always did, and oh crap, I was short 15cents. I only have my word as proof, sorry. It might have varied from state to state anyways. I live in N.E. Ct.
