also try the series of books by Piers Anthony that are called the Incarnations of Immortality. There are seven books in this series....was a really enjoyable read for me.

Deepak Chopra wrote a novella about Merlin, based on the King Arthur legends. (You have to look up the name yourself).
Personally, I recommend anything by Clive Barker. Those might be a little too much for you to handle, though.
