Why didn't Atkins work? Was it that you found the diet too difficult to stick with or did you follow it to a tea and still not lose weight? I don't want to make assumptions.

I'm 33 and had a baby last year and just couldn't get my metabolism kicked in. I started the Cambridge Diet and found immediate success. I'm still on it and frequently switch between the different variations of the diet as my needs change. It's a very flexible plan and is inexpensive. My before and after photo is the first displayed in the website below. You might consider this diet. Many user's don't gain their weight back either because it's not just about losing the weight, it's about behavior modification and it has a long and proven track record.

I'm 44 lost 40 lbs. in 90 days. I wasn't trying for rapid loss. it just happened. I've maintained almost 6 months and am definately doing good. If you have kids make them clear their plates and leftover snacks. I read that 40 bites, on average, of snacking while "doing the dishes" will add a pound. I switched from 3 meals to 6 "snacks" a day. I'll have a banana and a granola bar for breakfast 2.5 hr later I'll have something like cheese and crackers. 2.5 hr later i'll have maybe celery w/ pnut butter. 2.5 hr later maybe a peach with yogurt. When I go home i'll cook a meal my family wants. I eat 1 reasonable plate full. remember if it fits in your palm its probably enough. I save the 6th for after dinner but rarely do that. If I do maybe popcorn. watch for the sneaky things like salad dressings. eat anything but in moderation. If I know I'm having crackers I look on the box and see how many a serving is, then only eat that much. I exercised 30 min a day 6 days a week. I also snow skiied 6-7 days a week the first 90 days. after that I wakeboarded 3 days a week. point is. fina something you can get into and do. GOOD LUCK.

I ran into an old friend in recent months and after talking with him, he told me about how he lost over 100 pounds. Because I need to lose about 50 pounds and have been unsuccessful, I really wanted to know how he did it. Here's how he did it.

He told me that what he did was simply this: Stop eating after 6 or 7 p.m. until after you get up in the morning. Take out all the snacks in the refrigerator.

I gave his diet a try and have lost about 10 pounds so far. For me, this is going to be a life-style change because I have some health issues like type II diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension, and so on. This has been the only successful diet I've been on. I've tried working out at the gym, doing 5 miles on the treadmill three times a week for more than a year, but with little result.

The body would like to rest from eating and have time to burn off excess food. This diet has worked for my old buddy, and is working for me. I am recommending this easy diet for everyone I know who has weight issues. I hope it can help you.

P.S. By the way, I have given this diet a name. I call it the ROSS diet, named after my friend who lost all that weight. I give Ross all the credit for his diet by creating an acronym out of his name, which is, Restrict Oral Stimulation after Sundown (Seven, Six).

Put yourself on a diet by eating a bowl of Special K in the morning then for lunch and dinner eat a Smart Ones frozen dinner. They are pretty good. Then I also buy the Smart Ones dessert called chocolate chip cookie dough. Those are yummy! I have one of those in the evening. When I need to loose weight this is what I do.
Hope this helps.

I understand exactly. I'm 62 and have put on 40 lbs in the last 3 years. I workout at curves and walk briskly at least 4 mi daily. I am considering phentermine, meridia or xenical, and have checked into the cost which is extreme.

Eat less fat and sugar (always skip dessert). Drink more water. Do 30 minutes of cardio before breakfast every morning. Be consistent and no problem.

Sorry to hear about the frustration. Don't quit. Here are some thoughts from my 360 Blog of September 10. I wish you well in your efforts.

Don't target losing more than about 2 lbs per week. If you try to lose faster, your body will go into "starvation mode" and get very stingy about burning calories while at the same time very efficient about storing any calories that you do provide. And it will make you feel awful.

There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below.

The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.

Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.

To lose a pound of fat, you need to eliminate about 3500 calories. You can do this by burning more with exercise or by modifying your diet to reduce intake. If you do a Google search on say, "swimming calories" you will quickly find a website with tables of calories burned for a given exercise. You can use such lists to estimate how many calories you are burning up with your routine.

For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet.

Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further.

There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you work them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive.

If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets.

Aloha

Drink twice as much water and eat half as much food. It has worked for me. I have lost about 15 pounds in five weeks so far.
