In the Gospel according to Mark, the word used for "purple" is the Greek word "porphura," Strong's Ref. # 4209, (pronounced por-foo'-rah) it is of Latin origin; from the purple mussel, i.e. (by implication) the red-blue color itself, and finally, a garment dyed with it.
The corresponding Hebrew word is "tekelet," Strong's Ref. # 8504, (pronounced tek-ay'-leth) which is derived from the word for the cerulean mussel, i.e. the color (violet) obtained therefrom or stuff dyed therewith.
The word in the Gospel according to John is a similar Greek word to the one used in Mark. The two are so similar that it is more a matter of shade, as opposed to color differences. The Greek word used is "porphurous," Strong's Ref. # 4210, (pronounced por-foo-rooce') derived from from another word "purpureal," i.e. bluish red. Therefore, it is not an issue of a contradiction in the Bible.
The two Greek words side by side are really similar:
porphura
porphurous
And you can easily have two people look at a color, and one may say "Violet" and another "Scarlet."

He did not start out with out clothes when they arrested Him. He may have had one color of a cloak before they flogged Him and beat Him and then put on the read one that belonged to one of the Roman soldiers, when they mocked Him and then put the crown of thorns on HIs head. Why you people Jump and the chance to claim a contradiction? When they crucified Jesus, the romans tore up the robe, and bid on it to further humilate Jesus.
All that matters is that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and what colore His robe will not keep you from obtaining salvation through accepting Jesus as your savior.
Did you know that a good portion of men are color blind?

KJV
Mark 15:17-18
17And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,
18And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
John 19:2-3
2And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
3And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
Reading is fundamental!!! Try it and as the poster above said, don't make things up.

Mark 15:17 They put a PURPLE robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!"
John 19:2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a PURPLE robe and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him in the face.
Don't try to make up contradictions.

It was really maroon. We all know men can only see 8 colors, and thus, one saw it as red and one saw it as purple. ;-P If you want to know the truth of this, try to get my guy friends to tell you the difference between eggshell and antique white.
