If your roof is 30x40 feet, then 30 times 40=1200. 1200divided by 100(One square) is 12 squares.

A roofing square is 10 "X 10". Simply measure the square footage of the roof and divide by 100.

length times the width . . .

the roof might be 50 feet long and it might be 20 feet from the edge to the peak and then 20 more from the peak to the other edge.

50 time 40 equals 2000 square feet.

if you are saying how to determine the length of the roof on an angle,
its trigonometry

you know base ( edge of wall to the highest point most likely the center)
you can figure the rise ( difference in the height of the center and the height at the egde

a^2=b^2=C^2
so,
lenght of the edge at an angle is
squar root of (distance from edge to center)^2 +(difference in height of center and edge)^2

that gives you the one side,
and you multiply that by the length ( of the house) assuming a simple roof
( of course thats one side) so you double it for the other side
I hope that helps.

Divide your roof into squares, rectangles or triangles. Find the areas and add up. I hope you know how to find the areas of these shapes!
