Hightlight done well are best. Streaking it looks tacky.
Auburn highlights look great in dark brown hair.

Give your hair a touch of red. Don't streak or get highlights unless you are going to someone really good. On dark hair this can look really bad really fast. You can do a red rinse or red streaks. Make sure it is auburn and not a bright red.

Please don't do skunky blonde hightlights, your hair will look horrible!! Try golden brown, auburn or caramel. Those colors best suit dark brown hair. Or you can leave your hair dark, it will look alot prettier than having streaks all over your hair.

My friend has really long straight brown hair, and she got some blonde highlighs w/ some red undertones. It looked awsome when she wore her hair straight. If you have curly hair i would recomend only getting highlights on the top layer. Trust me it looks really awsome when you where your hair down!
Hope this helps!!!

Highlights look very nice on dark hair. or if your bold enough to have a chunk(s) done to make a subtle statement of who you are. or you could undercolor the hair at your nape as to only show it sometimes. there are so many different choices you could make. It all depends on your preferences and who strong you feel about yourself.

Go for auburn/chestnut highlights. Prettier than blonde skunk stripes!

Don't do it yourself, because of the length it could come out spotty and uneven, talk to a professional and they can help direct you to what is best for you.

With no pics, I can't give an honest answer. It all depends on your facial features, coloring, etc.
