When a woman has a pelvic exam at a prenatal visit and if it comes back that she has an infection or an STD, do they tell her before the appointment, when they find out, or do they make her wait until the appointment?

You should be able to call and find out if your test results came back nomal. They should tell you then whether you need to come in for results or if everything was ok. If it is something like an infection(like a UTI) they might call you to let you know you need to come in, or they could call in a prescription to a pharmacy of your choice. It really depends on the doctor's office. Don't rely on them always calling you though, sometimes files get put away before calls are made, or some other mix-ups, so you need to call if you don't hear back from them within a week.

If they can see the infection visibly while doing the exam they would tell you right there. Otherwise they will have to send the test out to a lab. Then as soon as they get the results back from the lab, the nurse/MA would call you at your home and let you know.

If any tests come back positive, the doctor will usually call you to set up an appointment to discuss the results.

If you and your doctor feel comfortable discussing any results over the phone, that my be an option as well.

It usually takes 2-4 weeks for the PAP results to come back from the lab, then the doctor will review any abnormalities, and then contact the patient if needed.

most of the time if a test comes back positive for anything then they will call you as soon as they know. My doctor likes to scare me and call and tell me that some tests are negative. But every time my heart jumps. If you have waited for a while, like 4 days and have not heard from them, then you can call and make sure. It is your information to know. After all you paid for the test. Relax and call them.

it depends on what the infection is...generally, if you have ANY type of infection the doctor will call you as soon as they get the results. And want to see you right away to get you started on antibiotics if necessary. Some infections can be harmful to the baby.

I think they call you and help you get started on medication before the next appointment.

They will tell her in private. If she has an std, then by law it has to be reported to the health dept.

I would assume they would tell you right away, the quicker you know the quicker they can start treatment if available.
