Amusing personal laws, and not to replace the actual State and Federal law. The only signifigance is that assigned by one on a personal level.

The ten commandments were introduced by people, and they imply inequality.

Jesus Christ stated only one commandment: "TREAT YOUR FELLOW HUMAN BEING THE WAY YOU WOULD WANT TO BE TREATED IN THEIR PLACE".

But this single commandment did not suit the ruling class, i.e the church/state alliance, who wanted to have one law for themselves, and another for their slaves and subjects! So they invented the ten commandments, instead.

As something that was born out of insincerity, they were never as powerful as intended, and few people observe them in modern society.

If we return to Jesus' one and only commandment, and if everyone adhered to it, the world would become a better place.

Significance? They have helped shape the course of events and nations. As in today, they are the basis of a large part of our laws and beliefs in regards to what it wrong or good.

At present, simply look at so many of the social problems that we have. Most of the problems are because we fail to follow these commandments.

Many divorces because of adultery. Many broken families and many individuals with so many problems are attributable to divorce as well as adultery.

Lying. How many problems have your experienced because of it? Your insurance is higher, maybe a lost job or promotion, etc.

Stealing? Again, think of the cost to you from stealing. Even if not toward you personnally, the costs of things you buy is higher because of shoplifting.

I think it would be wise of all of us to ask the significance today of not following the ten commandments. What have you seen today that is the result of people not following them?

They're pretty basic rules to live by, if you ask me:

1. God comes first - go to church, listen to your faith's teachings.
2. Respect your parents
3. Don't worship material things (after all, the love of money is the root of all evil)
4. Don't kill
5. Don't steal
6. Don't lie
7. Don't cheat on your spouse
8. Don't be jealous of what your friends have that you don't.
9. Don't curse
10. Go to church every week.

Yeah, I got them out of order, and obviously, my verbiage isn't right, but you get the idea....I wish they held more priority in people's lives - following them (even if you followed seven of the ten) would sure eliminate a lot of social ills!

Well in todays society even though many people do not believe in god these days the ten commandments are still used in society such as the one that says thou shall not kill it is a crime to kill, to steal, and a few other commandments are laws adopted into our society

Ten commandments from the Torah, Jewish law are asscribed to a people group that wish to follow Jehovah. In New Testament writtings Christ gave the commandment to Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind, and love your nieghbor as yourself. This is a completion of the law, not a rewritting of earlier laws. So people who wish to follow God are asked to keep the commandments in thier heart, write them on thier minds and follow them with thier souls. More significantly most laws in modern society have base oragins on these fundamentals, but as of rescent times with more sepperation from Church and State these laws conntinue to be challenged. Most prevelent is the commandement to keep the sabath holy. With malls and shop open, many business do buisness on what is the modern day Sunday. That is a sepperate argument however, that Sunday and not Saturday is the Sabath. Christians in modern times (35 ce) and on are exempt from many of the traditional Jewish laws which for men number over 400.

Importance in modern times is that these laws if interpreted correctly have to do with relationship among one another. Keeping your personal relationship healthy is part of what God intends. We are to live in peace with one another, that is beyond being Jew or Christian, but can be considered a human trait. In times like these (during wars in the middle east) we have negelected some of these basic human principles. This results in fractured relations among nations. Even when you do not ascribe to a faith it is difficult to argue against healthy relationships and what keeps them intact.

Modern society and plueralisim, the lack of ethnocentrisim and our dissdain for anything that is different keeps us from truely understanding our neighbors and respecting it's values and lifestyles. When you keep the commandements you have joy (for those that are faithful) when you keep mans laws, you have peace. The two must coexist in harmony.

Throwback to olden days when freedom of religion and speech was not allowed (check commandments #1-4 which restrict speech and religion, and #10, which relegates women to property of your neighbor).

I find it appalling that some people who call themselves Americans want to have these words enshrined in stone on government property.

Personally I think we should have the bill of rights enshrined in stone, not a set of laws that, if enforced, would violate those rights.

When you look at society over all...it appears that there is no significance in them at all.....and as time goes by there will be less and less, because there is all ways a reason or excuse or some way around them that is condoned.

I just love the way ppl slam these Laws, yet if anyone of them ever happend to them, they'd be the first to complain !

Society needs rules, otherwise there would be chaos. Enough said.
