There are almost 7 thousand known languages in the world. Only about half of these have a written language. It is common in many parts of Africa for people to speak 5 or 6 languages. Many Europeans are multilingual as well. It would not be possible for someone to know all languages because there are still parts of the globe with tribes that have never been reached by the outside world.

As far as the most common languages:
Top 5 Languages of the World - Source TIME Almanac 2001

1. Mandarin Chinese: 885 million
2. Spanish: 332 million
3. English: 322 million
4. Bengali: 189 million
5. Hindi: 182 million

and of course your common languages like:
French
German
Italian
Russian
Arabic
Japanese

I dont know of any record for who is the most fluent in the world, but often multilingualism doesnt extend beyond 7 or 8 languages.

I know someone who is fluent in seven languages, and I find that very impressive. But seven languages are a mere drop in the bucket compared to the staggering number of languages that are out there, so no, I don't think that any one person could be fluent in every single one of the world's languages.

Nope, I guess it's not possible.
If you only consider that there's something like 200 languages in the World (which is an underestimation cause not including things like dialects).
If you consider that we live someting like 80 years and that you start learning a language at you birth date, then you have to learn a language FLUENTLY in 5 months. Not possible.

I think it is possible to be fluent in many of the common languages, but, in Africa and Asia there were/ are hundreds of tribal languages, and it would take many lifetimes to memorize them all.

I never heard about that . But I used to know someone who speaks more than 6 languages . This person says he prefers to speak the old Greek language ; because it's an original language ; so he ignors modern Greek .
