And what is a good brand to buy for everyday use?

Eight megapixels is alot better than five. The real difference is in the size of pictures you can create. 5 MP is more than enough for internet pictures and regular photos. If you want to print out great quality full page (8 1/2 x 11) picture, you'll get noticeably better image quality. Megapixels shouldn't be your only basis for judgement, however. A nine megapixel camera with a bad lens or high noise will take terrible pictures compared to a four MP camera with better features. As to brand, I'm most familiar with Canon and would recomend one of their cameras. I find that they are reliable and very user friendly. But remember, it's important that you get a chance to see what kind of pictures the camera takes and make your own choice based on your needs, instead of doing what other people say.

If you always plan to compose your pictures perfectly, you don't need 8 MP. If you want to allow for cropping, which means enlarging only a portion of your image, the more pixels the better.

Imagine taking a scenic view and then noticing that the middle 20% of the photo would make an even better picture. Suppose you take a picture of a whole group of people and Aunt Clara really, really looks great in the picture, but everyone else looks lousy. If you have the pixels to work with, you can still make a decent print of Aunt Clara that she would be happy to have.

If you buy a 8 MP camera and don't want to TAKE large photos, you can always set the camera to a lower file size. You can never go the other direction, though. Unless the cost is a major issue, buy the 8 MP camera. You will never be sorry that you did, but you might one day be sorry that you didn't.

I'll leave it to the others to suggest a brand, as I admit that I'm getting out of touch with P&S cameras since I moved into the DSLR's. Check out these sites for ideas, though:

Yes. 3 mega pixel difference. The larger the mega pixel number, the better quality picture you will get. You would have to set the camera to it's best quality setting, but you'd need a larger (at least 1GB) memory card to hold the images.

The brand depends on size of the camera, cost, etc. Try this site:

it's one of many digital camera sites.

i'm not sure about brands but i have a fujifilm. the higher the number of mega pixels means that it has more pixels in the pictures. more mega pixels will give you a more clear picture, especially when it's enlarged.

A resounding yes! There is a noticable difference. Right now HP has a 10 MP camera for $499. They also have less resolution cameras for less money - something for everyone.

1.5 to 2 is good enough for web stuff, over 5 is about as good as a 35mm. The more the better. I would NOT recommend a Canon, they are junk and their customer service sux...I have had very good luck with Sonys....

Your max picture size for the 8 megapix would be greater by almost 40%.
