My fella is in the Army, and he often has to go out and buy kit out of his own pocket because some of the stuff they get issued is so poor.
Yes.. i remember one incident reported from Iraq where it was said one soldiers life could have been saved had he had the correct body armour.
Yes, it is terrible. If this government insists on sending our young men and women to war, then the least it can do is ensure the army has enough money to provide decent kit.
We cannot avoid death and injury in war, but we sure as hell should be doing everything in our power and knowledge to reduce it.

I agree Tony sent the troops out poorly equipped, and he can often be accussed of hypocrisy - but he has always said that we have the best servicemen/women in the world - because we do which you are as a former serviceman are privileged to know.
People have died due to being poorly equipped - we did not apperar to be well prepared for war. Hopefully much of that is rectified now. Tony appears to have rose tinted spectacles and to see only the best in things - a dangerous trait in a politician of his standing - you only have to look and the Peter Mandelson debacle. It is once again political spin,

I don't agree that our troops are poorly equipped. I was a grunt in Vietnam. We were forced to wear flack jackets most of the time. That slowed us down in movement. The extra weight meant we could carry less ammo. And I question how much protection they offered. We were issued M16s that jammed.I was never caught without a welding rod to clear the chamber and barrel. Most of the equipment and C rations were from the Korean War era.Boots and clothing were hard to come by unless had a job I a secured area. It sure didn't seem to bother the civilians back in the world much. My point is, I believe today we have equipped military yet. But I don't believe we can ever do enough to help people who are in combat.

"The best in the world" is a reputaion in Britain that is rightly deserved, even though our technology isn't as good as what the Americans or Russians can produce, even though we have poorly equipped soldiers, we have a history which proves that Britan doesn't mess around when it comes to war. Although our technology is of a lesser quality than that of the Armilite M16, or the Kalashnikov Industries AK47, we can still use this equipment to our advantage also because of our training, which, unlike other naions in NATO and the rest of the world, we have a 6 1/2 month training course, which all new cadets go through, plus, the british armed forces are very choosy about who serves amongst their soldiers, sailors and airmen. 90% of all applicants to join the British ared forces are knocked back, very much like the SAS selection process.

What a wonderful question (and many suggestions which could prove very helpful to our men and women in uniform)! Those reading should take the time to print this page and post it at work, church or give it to organizations who could help out. We have a nephew serving in Iraq and he told us some of the things they like to receive. The most surprising food request was for fresh fruit. We belong to Costco and Sams Club and can get a large bunch of bananas for a very small cost. I was not aware that they could be sent by the Post Office to the military but, I sent them at a low cost and they arrived in one week. There are so many fruits available and you might even consider sending a crate of oranges or grapefruit that are available this time of year. My nephew and his companions shared the fruit and were thrilled. We have also sent granola bars, nuts, candy (which won't melt), gum, and many different items they love to receive (CD's are another favorite) and also magazines (cars, sports, or anything they might like to read about). Our military is the finest in the world. They are serving us and protecting our freedoms. They need to know how much they are appreciated and how thankful we are to have them to do the job which is so necessary. Some do not believe there has been any progress but, I can tell you that there are major improvements and those who are there feel that the truth is not always being told to those back home. This can be very discouraging. Send a letter and a package and do it often. We do care!! Let them know by taking the time to write and send that package. Letters from home are very important and so is the surprise package from the ones who are benefiting from the service they are doing for us. God bless our military and God Bless America!! Migz: Thank you for a wonderful question and for your support of the military!! Not only do you deserve a star; YOU are a STAR!!

BirdsnakeCatherine...you're WAY wrong...
It's a proven fact that US Troops weren't well-enough equipped. They didn't have bullet-proof body armour or bullet proof hum-v's, amoungst other things...This has been a constant conversation and debate for the past year and half.
And it's true, just because a soldier doesn't have the best of equipment, doesn't mean that makes them any less of a soldier...
In my eyes...any serviceman or woman are the finest and are heros.

Did your troops have armor in WWI? WWII? Various other conflicts?
Bottom line is that British troops are some of the best, armor does not change that. Stop looking at the would have, could haves. Disasters did not strike because of no armor. they struck because insurgance attacked troops.

Dear Lord, Please help these poor unfortunates to squeegee their third eye.
the question here is not about the level of dedication on the part of our troops. which would be the same if they had been sent out naked. the question is about the filth and bile that seems to pour endlessly from blairs lips.
