A XLT is a basic model of Ford F150 and F250 and Lariat is a more advanced model of the F150, F250 and F350.

a lariat is the rope that cowboys use to lasso cattle. It makes Fords sound "tough." XLT is just a set of letters that sound "fancy."

They mean whatever the vehicle manufacturer's advertising department wants them to mean. Usually (but not always) the more letters or numbers, the higher quality and more expensive the trim package is.
