Website dating is like trying to lose weight by switching to diet coke. Its a step but generally a feeble one. The popularity is still growing, but most of us determine chemistry from things we can not sense from text.
However, match.com makes the most noble attempt but you may have to do a song and a dance for several month only to meet someone who is totally not what you are looking for.
My useless opinion is to find some causes or activities and find groups of people who meet. Nothing beat the sparks one feels when doing something with a potential someone...

eharmony as far as matches that actually have an air of peacefulness about them. match.com for the ability to search far and wide and have millions (literally) to choose from.
eharmony matches you without the ability to search so provides fewer "matches," but with match.com you're on your own as far as compatibility goes. My husband would also warn to watch for psychos, but that's true no matter where you go. I've also had friends who have experienced *some* success with Yahoo personals. Good luck!

Match.com claims to be the largest. But I've found that most of these dating sites are pretty lame when it comes to matching you with some one.

my opinion is match.com
I have used both match.com and eharmony.com
Let me tell ya, eharmony, not fun. I didn't meet any quality people at all on it.
match is pretty crappy if you let them do all the matching but at least you get a much better feel right off
