Where I live you don't have to have car insurance. So I guess it would depend on the state. I used to live in state where you needed insurance. If you didn't have insurance you would get a ticket. Usually the fines are outrageously high.

As far as I know, you are ticketed and then you have to go to court to provide proof that you actually had insurance at the time or that you have it now.

you lie and say you have insurance to the officer. then the same day buy insurance so you can prove to the judge that you indeed did just purchase insurance that day hours before the police pulled over you. it worked for me
