If you have a dog, and have experience with training a dog, what's the best method to teach them not to bark so often?

I have 2 dogs.... a miniature doberman pinscher, who is 5 years old, and a jack russel terrier mix, who is 1 year. They both bark and they just end up feeding off each other. Me and my husband are running out of ideas!

Squirt water in their face when they do it. They associate barking with a negative connotation and thus stop doing it. Plus water is a humane correction.

Depends on why he's barking. Is he doing it out of excitement? Is it boredom barking from being chaing outdoors all day? Is it barking whenever he hears strange noises at night? Some dogs bark just to get attention, even if the attention is negative ("bad dog shut up")

You'll have to know what's triggering the barking in order to be able to un-train it.

it may sound weird, but first you must teach your dog to speak. Every time he barks say good speak and give him a treat. Continue doing this until he can bark on command. Once he's mastered that you need to teach him out. Get him to speak then tell him out. Every time he quits barking praise him and give him a treat. Worked for me with 3 different dogs. Good Luck.

you could try giving him treats when he's quiet. Like when he gets into a barking fit wait until he stops and the second he stops say good boy and offer a treat, but only offer it if he is quiet. You can also give him a treat while he's laying down and quiet. Gradually wean him off of treats and just praise and pet him/her.

I would go the clicker training route. That way you can signal the dog with a noise that will draw his attention away from what he is barking at.

THERE is a collar you can buy that sends a little shock when the dog over barks. AND there a collar you can buy that when you tell him stop and he dont you press a button and he gets a little sting. AFTEr a while you speak stop, and he will quit.

what I have done is use a spray mister with water on the face AT the actual time they are doing whatever it is you want them to stop. Usually very effective.
