We got a dog that was a stray, now we found out he is microchipped, but we would like to microchip him with our information. IS that possible?

no I am not stealing the dog, I took it to the animal shelter and they tried getting in contact with the previous owner, but they still have not responded after 3 weeks. You don't have to be such a jerk gitemgang. So stop assuming!!! I did everything to try and find his owner!

Yes, of course it's possible. You just need to contact the microchip company to have the information changed (I believe Avid is the most prevalent chip maker). However, they're going to want proof that you obtained the dog legally, so you'll need to show a copy of the adoption papers. Since you say it was a stray, the previous owners may have lost the dog, so you should contact whoever the microchip is registered to to be sure they didn't accidentally lose the dog.

When I got my dane through the local rescue, he was microchipped (through Home Again). What I had to do was fill out a change of information form and submit it to the company. They will contact the previous owner to make sure that it is okay for the information to change and that the selling, adopting, etc. of the pet was not against their will. If the previous owners do not respond within 30 days, the company will proceed with the information change as if the previous owners responded that the change was acceptable.

Hope that helps at all.

P.S. - Your vet will be able to tell you what company the microchip is from - they all have specific sequences that are company specific. Once you know the company (and the vet should be able to give you an 800 number) you will be able to do the change.

If he is microchipped, he may not be a stray, but just lost! Find the real owner! If the previous owners really don't want him, they should be able to change the info to yours.

THIS is one of the problems with the stupid chips, they make no difference if some one doesn't WANT to return the dog!

Yes it is possible. It would be easier to reregister the chip. Have you contacted the previous owner to see if they want the dog back?

All you do is call the registry and have the information updated in their computer, all there is on the chip is a number, there isn't anyones information.
The two registries in the US are Avid, and Home Again, Find out which type your dog has and call them. VALA your all done

No, I can't. But, then, I'm not a vet. Try one of those.
