what community you end up in will depend on the branch of ROTC you choose and the needs of that branch. a some point, all officers have a desk job, but you don't start off that way.
you WILL deploy. period. even if the war ends in two weeks and everybody comes home in a month.. you WILL deploy.
If you are afraid of being in a position where you could get hurt, then the military is not for you. even non combat jobs have some element of danger to them. Officers need to be leaders as well as managers, and you can't lead from behind a desk.

This is how it works: You sign up for ROTC as a high school senior or high school graduate (the earlier you sign up, the better). If you're accepted, the Armed Forces pays for you to go to school. In return, you take one ROTC course per semester and you "drill" with your ROTC unit during your summer breaks. Once you graduate, you agree to spend at least four years in the service as an officer.
What type of job you have depends on which branch of the service you apply for and your major. If going to war is what you're after, apply for the Army or the Marine Corps. If you'd rather have a desk job, apply for the Air Force or the Navy (Air Force would be better).

If you are currently in ROTC and in your 3rd year you are asking this question far too late.
If you are considering ROTC and are looking for a nice safe desk job....don't waste your time or suck up a slot someone else willing to raise their right hand to defend against all enemies foreign and domestic prior to receiving your commission.
As a commission officer your primary job is to lead others. You can't lead from behind a desk.
During my time in the service I never meet another officer that wanted a desk job but plenty that want to get out from behind their desk and command troops.

Well, it depends, I think sometimes you have 4 years mininum service. Also, what kind of job depends on which branch you choose. My husband chose Air Defense, and he doesn't really have a desk job, but he hasn't gone to war either. The pay and benefits are pretty good too.

If the wars we're fighting these days are important enough for you to risk your life then the rotc is the place for you. If you don't believe or approve of the types or wars this country is fighting then stay away.
