You become legally liable for your actions. No discounts or anything else. You are elligible to sign legally binding contracts, etc. Basically it frees you from your current guardians, be they parents or legal guardians via a court order.

Emancipation is freedom, and the act itself doesn't give you any special privileges.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emancipated
·Politically people are freed from harsh restrictions and made into full citizens.
·It also means that act that freed the slaves.
·Legally it has two meanings the freedom of those convicts in the Australian penal colonies and freedom of a minor effectively turning him or her into an adult.

The final legal form of the word is when a minor is set free from the restrictions of their parents. This is a very rare circumstance only used when the parents can’t provide effective care for the child and there are no other competent relatives that can assume the care of the child. Or if the minor is given permission to marry this was common in the past, but it has become less accepted in modern cultures. In the case where a pair of minors have a child the father could step up and marry the mother. Both children would be emancipated.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emancipation_of_minors
“Emancipation of minors is a legal mechanism through which a person below the age of majority gain certain civil rights, generally identical to those of adults. An emancipated minor is free of any authority from his or her parent or other legal guardian. The extension of these rights, as well as the remaining prohibitions, vary according to the jurisdiction.
In most countries of the world, adolescents below the legal age of majority may be emancipated somehow: through marriage, economic self-sufficiency, educational degree/diploma or pregnancy.
In some cases, parental consent is needed to achieve the "emancipated" status. In some cases, court permission is necessary.”

The child could get emancipate him from his parents and give him the ability to control his own money, get married, or make other financial decisions on his own. Such a child could move out of his parent’s house and buy his own. In that case then he pays Income Taxes (Federal and State--if the state has any) based on his own income level. If the emancipated child gets any tax breaks then they would be based on his own income.

The courts are not prone to emancipate a minor since most children simply can’t take care of themselves. The legal system would prefer to put the child into a foster home where the foster parents can take care of them.

The age of consent for marriage varies with each state and the local customs. When Jerry Lee Lewis married his 14-year-old cousin many people could not accept that. However, at the time it was legal in their state and accepted by the culture that they grew up in. They didn’t think it was unusual, the parents had to give consent for their child to get married, thus emancipating her.

If a child is a genus and advanced enough in his classes to attend college, while he is still a minor, then one tactic the parents could use to get financial aid would be to emancipate the child and let them file for the financial aid based on their income (effectively zero).
Legally the only difference between a minor and an emancipated minor is that the emancipated minor can enter a legal contract. If a minor purchased a home without their parent’s signing the document, then it would not hold up in court. Legally children under the age of 16 are considers to be unable to make the responsible decisions that would let them enter such a contract so that contract would be invalid. This is well known in most industries or business that require contracts and is taught in any basic business law course.

There aren't any other benefits for being emancipated; you don't get cheaper apartment rates or any other breaks for the act of emancipation. If the child moves out of his parent’s home then any breaks given to him will be based on his income level.

Emancipation is a declaration that you can take care of yourself without the help of your parents. You could check into public-assisted housing, but it might not be available. Good luck.

Usually you only hear about TV stars who earn plenty of money doing this, to keep their parents out of their finances.
