Which would you prefer for yourself?

The first means you either screwed off in high school and failed or got kicked out or got pregnant. The second means you (at least) made it through and walked with your class.

I think to the working world, they mean the same thing...

GED is a 5 part test you take to determine if you have the minimum education needed to quailify for a diploma. A diploma is proof that you met all the requirements of your state to receive a certificate for the years of education you took required by law. Both are accepted as proof you are not uneducated. I have a GED and it has been good enough for me to get into collage and get a good career. Its best to finish high school but for some people that can't finish high school for whatever reason the GED is often the best choice for them. I hire both diplomad and GED holding people at my company. Both are equal to me.

According to my friend who has a GED, you are still considered to not have a diploma when applying to colleges with a GED.

A diploma is given for someone who had the drive to stay in school and finish it. A G.E.D. is for a drop out who couldn't handle regular school. I have a diploma and TWO college degrees.

diploma means you took long way, g.e.d. means you took the shortcut. as for me i got me a g.e.d. from the streetz. (gangsta.enforcing.drugs)
