Working under or being in a room with flourescent lighting over a long period of time can cause you to see spots...sort of like the after affects of looking into the sun. The same can happen when looking at a computer monitor over a lengthy period of time. However, such actions would only cause you to see spots momentarily. If you are seeing spots continually or on a regular basis, then you should see an optometrist.
