Purgatory- a place of temporal punishment for those who die in God's grace, but are not entirely free of sin (ie- everyone!!)
It is like a waiting room, a cleansing process before you get to heaven. There are references to purgatory not only in the New Testament (Matt. 5:25-26,12:32 and 2Tim. 1:18) but the Old Testament (2 Mach.12:46) as well.

Catholics believe that nobody will enter heaven until they are a Saint. Otherwise heaven would have the same problems that we have on earth.
So, if you are not domed to hell, and if you believe in God, and Don't die in a state of Sainthood, Purgatory is a place for you soul to go to repent for your sins on earth and purify your soul so you can enter heaven.
I suspect that will be a busy place!
Peace!

Purgatory is the place before you get to Heaven or Hell. It's the place that you go before judgement. Kind of like the waiting-room to judgement.

Purgatory is a "place" between heaven and hell. You have to purge your signs by praying etc to be able to enter heaven.
